Bromley Wine Circle does Rioja - 16th November 2023: Served blind. Some gun-flint initially and a lovely slightly mulled plum fruit. Some blackcurrant leaf and the faintest suggestion of beetroot. Palate is compact but correct fully mature but will drink well over the next few years; these older Riojas can hang on longer than expected sometimes. With an hour in the glass the nose reveals some red fruit pastilles and a suggestion of lime curd. A real treat - corrected called as a 1970 and from a mid-tier house by one of our number - chapeau.

Riojathon (London SW11): Served blind (though knew is was a Rioja). Fairly mature colour but not so much. On the nose it's a bit spiky to start but quickly settles. Some cordite, leather orange peel,, blackcurrant (someone says) and perhaps fruit pastilles. It's quite narrow but focussed. It's not at all tired and perhaps even freshens up for a while with a little more fruit and shoe polish. Not a very long finish which leads me to guess a mid-ranking producer. And knowing we all always under-guess for age, I eventually plump for 1970 (as a strong year) and Bilbainas as the producer. Which turms out to be ridiculously close! A super wine though.

Riojathon (South West London): Served blind. On the downslope I think (although some discussion about what that means- I mean not improving rather than rapidly declining) - some tertiary aspect there - beetroot, damp herbs, but still a purity of fruit and a real acid character. A privilege to taste and so much life.

Many years since my last bottle of this but holding steady. Wonderful accompaniment to grilled pork sausage because the fatty pork is balanced by the wine’s light body and acidity. Lovely earthy notes are supported by orange peel and light tobacco. Complex and balanced. Such a pleasure to drink. And this from a bottle with such a loose cork that I couldn’t get the screw through it and it pushed down into the bottle. Nice that old Rioja has little sediment.

Jaggerfest 2019 (Harwood Arms, London): Slightly cloudy. Sweet fruited with a touch of caramel, but this holds together and develops well in the glass. Good trad Rioja. Finley velvety with a touch of leather and gentle spice. Lovely. ****
