  • Quite youthful for a 46-year-old wine; ruby all the way to the rim. Seems to have quite an herbal component to it, including dill. Still, it is impressive given how old it is. Amazing how well Riojas age. 5-11-15-8: 89/100.

Next day, a little less herbal, a bit more caramel. Score still seems about right.

  • Wow! A real surprise and treat.
Bright color with slight bricking on the rim, not what I expected for a 47 year old. Luxardo cherry, some other red fruits, leather, soft oak, some sweet tomato paste on the front end. Palate revealed more of the same with still some light acidity, deep concentration, mushroom
and chalk with some wet stones on the back end. Full finish carried by the fruit and leather. Easily the WOTN. This is drinking beautifully and will for another decade. Glad to have two mags left!

  • Bodegas Riojanas Rioja Monte Real Gran Reserva tasting (Boqueria Penn Quarter, Washington D.C.): Incredibly youthful color. Expressive nose displaying concentrated red fruit, cherry liqueur, a hint of strawberry, leather, raw matsutake, sweet spices and limestone. Excellent concentration, nicely layered concentrated red fruit, round and warm, bright acidity, good mineral presence and a long warm concentrated red fruit driven finish. This is drinking beautifully.

  • CRIBBS @ La T (La Trompette, London): Given it’s age and the probabilities of bottle variation it’s hard to imagine a better bottle of this. Bright and vribrant with a sensuously deep, velvety silliness to he plush fruit. Pitch perfect acidity to keep everything in balance. Long and inviting. Spot on. *****

  • Tasted at the winery on tour with Tim Syrad Wine Tours. This was the final wine in a vertical tasting of 6 vintages from 2009 to 1978. A lovely opportunity to taste this 40 year old wine in the winery's underground cellars. Decanted and poured immediately by the winemaker. The nose showed some browning but was still clear and there was minimal sediment. The nose is just starting to fade but still shows caramel and leather. It's a lovely smooth wine and a real treat to taste. But its rarity today means it retails at 1000 Euros a bottle, so not a best buy unless money is no object!
