  • Fully matured, beautifully balanced and complex. Roses, sweet red orlik tobacco, mahogany, raisins, prunes. A bit rusty/metallic and alcoholic initially, but it evaporates with a quick decant. Finishes long and beautiful with a seductive sweetness. Rivals mature top Bordeaux.

  • Exalted and much much better than 2017 bottle. I guess 40, 45 years is plenty of time for some bottles to veer off the rails and others to achieve the level of a completely integrated beauty of the one we had here. Enjoyed with paella, this was surprisingly stuffed with just ripe red fruit, and offered all sorts of complementary citrus, dill, gentle bark, and vitality across the board.
Drinking at peak, bottles as good as this one have at least another 10 years (but again, our last bottle, six years ago, was over to hill).

  • Sensational bouquet here, complex and effusive aromas of sandalwood, incense, old leather, cherries, a touch of dill, and some sour-acetic lemon zest. Definitely influenced by American oak, but completely integrated and harmonious. The palate drops off after the bouquet, but still very good with silky, woodsmoke-infused cherries with plenty of lemony freshness. 92-93 pts.

  • A lot of positive barrel influence here, lactic but appealing, crushed incense, perfumed from age, pickled cherries, a comfortable old leather chair, superb alone and with paella valenciana. You like Bosconia? This might be better. Balsamic glaze reduced with bay leaf and rosemary sprigs. Stunning.

  • Sunday Funday (Chicago, IL): It's not corked but there's that weird old Rioja smell that seems to trigger the same sensors in my brain. A nice amount of red fruit, dirt, and maybe a hint of animal funk or sweat. The palate's fruit is still there, but this is pretty much close to the end of its peak, at least to my palate.
