  • With my nephew at our house. No detailed notes. Cork was soaked, some seepage. Fading brick colour. Strawberry, dill, mushroom, earth, tobacco, spices, clove, and balsamic notes, with medium-level acidity, fully resolved tannin, and very good length. Medium-bodied, and smoothly textured, with some old age sweetness. Benefited from careful aeration. Fully mature. Drink now.

  • From mag, drinking younger than its age suggests. not the depth of flavor, complexity I expected after enjoying some of their older vintages. Very balanced with silky tannins, some black cherry and hints of leather. Medium finish.

  • From magnum. Rich and ripe red fruits. Sweet old Rioja flavors, with tobacco, earth and wood. Still has tannins but they are smooth. Hard to believe this is from 1975 as it is not showing signs of age. Not the most complex old Rioja ever (perhaps the warmer vintage?) but lovely and succulent right now. This came direct from the bodega and looks like it was recorked there recently.

  • Bodegas Riojanas Rioja Monte Real Gran Reserva tasting (Boqueria Penn Quarter, Washington D.C.): Despite darker than the 78, very tertiary dominated Burgundian nose displaying very sweet red fruit, mushroom, leather, damp cellar, tobacco and earth. Fully mature palate, subtle sweet red fruit, warm and silky, medium acidity and mineral, surprisingly a hint of slightly coarse tannins and a medium long shy red fruit driven finish with a hint of damp cellar at the end. Along with the 64 and 75, most mature showing.

  • “G8 summit – Milestones and memories of my past” (non-blind), Wine 6: The year in which my dear friend and generous host met his wife and started his first job. And my year of birth. The wine offered red fruit, strawberry, raspberry, raspberry effervescent powder, spice, clove and marzipan flavours on the palate, with lively acidity, fully resolved tannin and very good length. The balanced, medium-bodied wine was very young for its age and benefited from aeration. A lovely wine!
