  • Juicy and delicious, tannins have fully resolved, a great summer red at cellar temperature. Excellent value.

  • Initial impression

A touch spicy on the nose with hints of old wood and a touch of leather underlying dark cherry fruit with just a hint of iron to it. Rather seamless in the mouth, rich but not weighty with a leathery entry followed by old wood framed sour cherry fruit and tart plum flavors that linger on the rather long, slightly drying finish. Acidity is bright but not pronounced. Finishes with some earthy/mossy detail and impressive length. Neither elegant nor particularly refined but pure and true to its roots. 90pts

    Final impressions.

The nose remains fairly earthy, though more open at this point with hints of violet and blueberry lending some complexity to the old wood and cherry fruit On the palate this has filled out a bit though at the same time it has become more transparent and vibrant as well with the acidity lending lots of tremble to the base note of fruit and earth. A touch of blue marl dustiness emerges on the finish, which is long and graced with ample blue berry and blue plum fruit as well as a light caramel accent note. The gentle touch of tannin here lends this terrific suple mouth grab through the long finsih. Still neither refined nor elegant, this is just superbly pure and well balanced Barbera. 92pts

A perfect pairing with tomato risotto.

  • Rich plummy black fruit dusted with spice and earth and cocoa, with a noticeable tannic edge. This is dense and concentrated and quite serious for Barbera, I actually think it needs some time to mellow out. Not good with pizza.

  • Decanted for an hour. The wine initially smelled and tasted like a black plum (the kind that's red inside), with that fruit's watery juiciness, before picking up black licorice smells and soil tones. The gentle tannins contributed to a background sense of cocoa, suggesting structure behind the wine's casual elegance. Good, perfectly balanced acid, which I don't always find to be the case with Barbera wines. Eventually, the wine had a delightful watermelon finish.
