  • Little tart for a zin, which to me adds to the appeal. Plenty of complexity lots of berry. Very nice.

  • Unthemed Mixed Reds/Regions (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): “82% Zin & 18% Petite Sirah;”

    N: Slightly closed; Smoke, blueberries

P: Med body; Rndish entry with almost swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which stays within hailing distance of the init frt as it evolves into a LONG, BALANCED, tangy/swt finish. LOVELY now (though I'd recommend a decant), + could well improve through the end of the yr before providing enjoyable drinking through '19, poss longer. Gold @ the '17 S.F. Chronicle Intl. Wine Comp. in the $24 - $27.99 class. [While NO sources show for this vintage as of Feb '20, subsequent vintages SHOULD be available in this producer's admirably consistent style!]

    Note: Also tasted on 12/3/16, + 1/1 & 3/18/17.

  • Zinfandels (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CAAt): 82% Zin, 18% Petite Sirah

    N: Closed/muted; cherries/smoke/earth; intensity lurking?

P: MF, poss M, body; With almost swtish frt on the front palate, this is a LONG, SEAMLESS, VERY nicely balanced effort for drinking now & through mid '19 min. VERY well done, it's only "mistake" being in the SAME flight as the '15 Seghesio Sonoma Cnty. ;) Also, compared to my recollection of 2 previous tastings (the 2nd of which was a purchased bottle), the frt was not AS forward this go around. Gold @ the '17 S.F. Chronicle Intl. Wine Comp. in the $24 - $27.99 class. [This vendor's $18.95 is VERY competitive!]

    Addendum: Also tasted on 12/3/16 & 3/18/17

  • Private Preserve after Day 1

    82% Zin, 18% Petite Sirah

N: Slightly closed; Some spice, poss cherries/blkberries

P: Med body; LOVELY frt on front backed up by tangy, spicy acidity. LONG, almost swtish finish with a VERY slight, firming astringency. An elegant, BALANCED style that will, based upon experiences with their '13 Massoni, drink even better by the end of '17!
// Day 2: N: A persistent, MUCH > developed melange of spice & frt (cherries/blkberries); P: Showing > firmness on the finish than I might have anticipated, though that might have been at least partially a factor of today's cuisine NOT being particularly red wine friendly.

  • Winebar [Various Reds] for 12/2/16 (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): N: Muted; Jam, earth; Intensity lurking?

P: Med, poss MF, body; Excellent frt on the front, ever so nicely balanced by acidity; SEAMLESS, VERY long, slightly spicy finish. ELEGANT, yet doesn't lack for substance. Will likely improve through '17, then hold for a few. My 2nd vintage of this [relatives picked up the '13 @ the winery], I'd describe it as a Swiss Army knife of Zins: Not OVERLY anything, but MORE than functional @ different pts of time & with differing expectations. Very, VERY well done, Jeff Runquist! [Score reflects a VERSATILE wine @ this vendor's UBER competitive $18.95.] 82% Zin, 18% Petite Sirah
