Light tropical nose with a lovely chalky underlay on the palate. Mineral tension, citrus pith and a little spice. Perhaps in a slightly mute phase but there class in abundance nonetheless.

From 75cl, decent cork, a bit spongey at end (if you squeeze it, wine comes out: not a great sign after only 4 years). I tasted the 2017 vintage of this wine on 17.10.2021 and was delighted (91P) but this is, alas, just another typically unripe 2016, with bitter root-vegetable fruit (turnip, carrot-juice, parsnip) and perhaps some unripe grapefruit of the bitter-acrid kind sold in German supermarkets (Texas, how I miss your citrus bounty). Once again, this confirms my impression that 2016 is a vintage to avoid for German Riesling if there is an alternative on offer. Wierdly, Spätburgunder seems to have done better. Go figure. 85-86P
