Italian evening at Nick's (Chez Nick): Medium dark red. Floral and sweet, a highly appealing nose with strong hints of olive in amongst the dark fruit - cassis and plum. In a good place, smooth mid palate, seems to speak of Italy. From a recently imported magnum, really delicous first wine to get going with.

Ferragosto feast! (Chez Nick): Magnum. Slightly natty on the nose, with hedgerow fruit. Piquant and red-fruitedly juicy on the palate, and expansive and tongue-coating without being rich, heavy or unapproachable. My previous experience of this wine was the 2004 last year, which was much darker and sterner than this wine despite the age difference.
We were unable to finish this on the night, so I vacuum sealed it and put the remaining 1/3 mag in the fridge. When that was drunk 48 hours after opening the wine had improved (I uprated from 90), with the nose showing more classical notes of cool black cherry and graphite and the palate becoming that bit more refreshing, like Italian Beaujolais. It may have benefited being served straight from the fridge in a Conterno Sensory...

Nick’s Festa di Ferragosto; 8/16/2023-8/17/2023: En magnum purchased at the cantina. Inky deep nose with a profound sweet blackcurrant. A little more serious on the palate but still has inky dark fruit, bramble leaf and just a hint of funkiness. Light tannins on the finish. Rafa says can be chilled and I can see that. Only other experiments with Granato and it had a very funky nose - this was much more well behaved.

Niccolo's Ferragosto Feast (Chez Nick): From mag, a rare opportunity to try this highly regarded producer and a grape with which I’m totally unfamiliar. Even from mag this was quite developed: coffee, meat, anise and tobacco - and with a darker blue and black cherry fruit character than I was expecting. Lovely aromatic lift and spice. Quite a full, alive nose. That richness on the nose contrasts with a zippier palate: more tart, high acidity, some tannic bite- definitely a food wine.
