Shiraz appreciation - cool climate Australians: dark purple and garnet in the rim with medium body. a bit of funk on the nose blows off quickly to reveal musky, truffly, earthy macerated plum and red fruit leavened by herbal touches and faint floral whiffs. fresh and silky in mouth, it has a distinctive and strong umami vein running from entry to finish: a lovely interplay of savoury, earthy and fruit notes. layers of fruit are accented by herbs, sweet spice, meaty overtones. tannins are well integrated and support the long, complex finish.
elegant and mature already, but with surprising touches of brightness that make for delightful experience. should drink very well for another handful of years at least.
13.5% AbV; from meticulosly farmed biodynamic vineyards in the foothills of the Australian Alps (Beechworth); it may have a dollop of Viognier.

Friday at the strand (Strand Cellars, Croydon): Savoury, meaty, almost a touch bretty, dense over-stewed black fruits with very slight white and black pepper notes which grows with time. Sour and rather unpleasant on the palate with tight, drying though relatively silky tannins and that over-stewed black fruit. Meh.
