Stunningly good. Starts off rather exotic (almost like a neuberger on the nose) but palate is complex, detailed and long. This is an expression of Sauvignon blanc that I only ever get with F. cotât wines here—that somewhat exotic nose with steely mineral mouth. Great now, should go for years.

Tasted double blind and then revealed while I was still getting note but I'm not a big Loire person and I don't know Vatan and this was my first so don't think the reveal spoiled anything (except maybe for others gushing about it.) Nose of musky melon and lychee. rich on palate with tons of lychee. Odd combo of topical richness and glyceral with tart and dry. Others like it but not my style. Sort of if Gewurtz and Sauv Blanc had a baby with the worst features of each. Finish feels volatile and also some fruit sweetness. A little fuzzy. Odd. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 0.5/2 = 13.5/20.

Vatan Vertical (TDS): Big, aromatic nose of tropical fruit with a hint of grassy notes. Wow, the palate is electric and super energetic with white fruit and citrus accents. There is density here but so much taut citrus acid and brightness. Chiseled, mineral finish.

Vatan-a-thon at TDS (Chicago, IL): Great wine. Bright herbal and mineral scents lead into a palate that's full of tart grapefruit and green apple, with a vivid chalky mineral base beneath. One of the lighter Vatans in the lineup; leaner on the palate with intense acidity but by no means lacking presence or intensity. Superb.

Vatan (2002 rouge, 2004-12) (Chicago, IL): One of the leaner wines tonight, and thus, one of my favourites. There's a nice bit of green apple here, as well as some other white fruit. The acidity is brilliant here: so much linearity and drive, but balanced by the opulent fruit. An excellent start to the lineup.
