This needed about two hours of air to really shine. Nose of cherries and a little baking spice. Palate of stemmy cherries and a hint of spice, with noticeable tannins and nice acidity.

Solid Old School Gevrey. Perfect Trapet and as the evening went on , the wine got even better. I like them now with the freshness and the fruit to dominate.

Blind. Gorgeous bright mid ruby. Earthy, meaty, Gevrey nose. A hint of cherry across the top. Harmonious but nicely structured with some tannin. Full on, old school style Gevrey sprinkled with some flair. Satisfyingly Gevrey. Boxes ticked. Tightens with air to show initially more tannin, and then after 90 mins, more acidity. A touch of smoke too. Gorgeous from the off, but realistically needs another five years of so to really show. ****

Jason’s ‘top’ village Burgundy (67 Pall Mall, London): Whole bunch freshness on the nose with red fruits and hint of forest floor. Medium bodied with v good definition and focus with no shortage of freshness and acidity is not overdone. Really lovely red fruits too. Really harmonious and balanced. Performed better than expected amongst esteemed company. From Zalto Burgundy.
