  • Starting to show some maturity, but it's still quite primary and fruity. Aromas of bitter herbs, green olives, dark cherry jam, sweet wild blueberry, a little mint, licorice and sweet miso. Elegant and fresh on the palate, plenty of crisp dark fruit, nice herbal and earthy elements, a little something meaty and umami. Tense and fresh on the finish. This will continue to develop nicely for at least a few more years, I should think.

  • Mellow, supple, just enough freshness, beautiful dark cherry note... damp forest and blue flowers too. Lovely Montepulciano, can't think of any others quite so elegant. I would keep an eye on it, but this should be great over the next 5 years, maybe a lot longer.

  • My last bottle (L 27419), and I am annoyed with myself that I didn't buy more. Decanted 45 minutes before serving, it is identical to the previous bottle so let me simply copy those notes: "Dark but transparent ruby color, lively cherry aromas complemented by wild herbs, sweet citrus, exotic and sweet spices. It has a medium body, with nice, sappy acidity and gentle tannins, and a long bittersweet finish." This wine does not have the structure for a long life, but it should be fine for a few more years. It is in a perfect spot right now. It's a pleasure to drink a balanced wine that has enough mid-palate sweetness to appeal to lovers of New World wines, but that also has a lifted, aromatic and medium-bodied structure. At $16 this is an outstanding QPR.

  • Good+, fun, excellent value. After 45 minutes of air in wide-bottom decanter, this was wide open and ready to go. Medium-bodied, with developing aromas of place and variety; should continue to drink well for several more years. Transparent, pure, and thoughtful; very happy with my purchase. Nosed ahead of the '14 tasted alongside. As good or slightly better on day 2. recommended+

  • I'll admit upfront that I am biased to any wine with Montepulciano in the name. The wines typically roll off the tongue like the word itself.

This Montepulciano Abruzzo is a deep purple in the glass. The earliest impression on the nose is of olives and an absence of fruit. There are strong aromatic notes of earth, fennel and black pepper spices.

In time, blackberry and blueberry fruit emerges, reminiscent of young, California Cabernet grapes of an era before the Parker explosion hit the contemporary palette of Napa wine makers. Oh, to go back to that time.

One searches for a bit more depth and complexity in a bottle. At a price of just less than $20.00 though, I could see going through bottle after bottle among friends with more of an interest in drinking than of studying.
