I did not hold out great hope for this 22 year old bottle of 1er Beaune. The cork was dry and completely crumbled into the bottle when I tried to remove it. So, I had to pour it through a sieve. From there I was surprised at just how good the wine still was … Pale, watery ruby with ochre highlights. Drunk from Zalto Denk'art Burgundy glass to enhance the aromatics. A lovely, mature Burgundian nose. Bright red cherries, raspberries, red rose perfumes, cocoa powder, nascent spices and a touch of dried herbs. No noticeable oak artefact. On palate, attractive, bright, tart red cherries and raspberries, clay and dried herbs. Evolved, rounded and mellow with savoury nuance. Barrique fully integrated. Below mid weight. Clean and pure. Not hugely complex but very enjoyable. Vibrant, fresh acidity. Great with food. Traditional Burgundy, nothing too fancy. Very much lighter 2000 red Burgundy in style. At age 22, fully open and drinking well. To drink in the next few years. It drank best on the first evening, becoming a bit leaner on the second.

Intact cork when pulled slowly, carefully. Subtly fuller bodied than its clear burgundy color would indicate. Palate did not budge when left in glass overnight. Maybe its hint of fruit has gone, a bit of tannin has appeared. Is this wine ageless?

Appearance is clear, pale rust with medium bricking and no sediment.
Bouquet is lovely and evolved. Plenty of dusty cherry and raspberry with worn cedar and dill.
Palate is textural and balanced. Tannins have resolved and there remains an acidic backbone.
Red fruit hangs on with a medley of dill, miso and earth.
Fully mature, drink now. Beautiful wine.

Perfect cork, medium ruby, no bricking. Smooth, subtle, earthy, leather. Light to medium bodied. Like an aged rioja, but less complex.

Agree with Cote D'or note. Day 2, hardly budged, a little truffle.
