  • Smells of spices, anise, meat(oak), black berries and some sweetness. Full of flavor, med to full body, spices, black berry, licorice, nice acidity. Very balanced, Soft tannins, ripe fruit, finish is pleasant. Ready to drink, not bad for the price

  • Decanted for an hour. Smoked meat, lilacs, white pepper, anise, blueberries and teak. Full-bodied, with a very elegant, long finish. Depth and fine-grained tannins. This builds and then nicely unfolds. Always a solid wine, and this particular vintage shows power and a caressing side. Drink 2024 - 2036.

  • $55 at Costco. They only had 2 bottles. Just watched Somm and again I was craving that Northern Rhone Syrah. Next up is Hermitage from the deep cellar, but too much upper cellar to drink.

Only 2 reviews here, the oldest not worth the post: Details, man, details.

Obviously, I did not get too big a discount, if any at Costco, which is usually never the case, but here paid more than the $52 average on Wine-Searcher.
No matter, because for what this is, it was worth it. "Not a good vintage." Said the reviewer, who maybe smoked a cheap stogie before tasting this wine, as this wine obviously has the stuff of a warm, ripe, sun roasted, steep hill.

Decanted at 13:00, to big ripe licorice and blackberry. I knew this had to soak in some more air before my lamb dinner. Why lamb for each of these reviews for pairing, you might ask. Well, my palate deserves to keep to a constant, and Australian lamb chop, pan seared medium with Real Salt is always the best constant.

At 17:30 a fresh pour from the decanter sported massive deep, dark licorice, loaded with very ripe and sweet blackberries. After another few minutes of swirling in the glass there showed density of wet, neutral wood, soft velvety leather, something of a luxurious feminine saddle: Sweet-Tarts in a leather pouch came to mind. Musk and earth started to show that held wet dirt with fresh clippings of mixed garden greens. A bucket of old fruit that sat in the sun all afternoon crept in and I was taken to my grandparent’s Idaho ranch. Reminded me of backpacking to the Great Divide with their quarter horses Prince and Princess. Flowers and violets eventually showed as well.

On the palate was big blackberry, leather and spices. The length was at least a good minute of evolution making my imagination dart here and there with references too many to capture in words. There was chew crunch of bacon, dry leather, grip of fatty, meaty edge. Loved that palate evolution as the drying tannins set in rendering each sequential sip to new levels of enjoyment. The predominantly enjoyable flavors were of the meats and bacon. This is a classic Cote Rotie, worth $55 for sure, despite what Dunnuck said.

I wonder if that last bottle is still there to be had.
