A good but not outstanding Barolo with a typical Nebbiolo profile that lacks a bit in terms of concentration, length, depth and aristocracy of flavour. Red and black fruits, spices, good but rather generic for the quality standards of the region.

Opened to breathe for 3h. Pale garnet, long legs in the glass. On the nose, sandalwood, spices, roses. On the palate, red juicy cherries, more sandalwood, chewy tannins and a smooth acid and peppery finish. Lovely feminine style barolo, tonight paired with agnelotti in Torino.

From glass. Color more advanced seeming, texture on eye thin seeming. Nose primarily of sharp glycerol, with earthy red fruit far away. Nose sweetening before first sip, on which there's leathers and red fruits and diffuse, fine tannin. Approachable. Possessed of a fine-ness. Was this my first Gaja? At any rate, none of the over-extracted "modern-ness" I thought that those wines were known for. Good wine.

Retail $120. 100% Nebbiolo. Fairly light in the glass, but heavy on rich aromas of red and black fruit with oodles of spice (black pepper, sage, even oregano) on the nose, close to a holy cow. The palate is even more incredible with balanced fruit, intense acidity, and a lengthy finish. Sure, this is already five years out from vintage, but this could use another half-dozen years or so.
