  • 13% alcohol. Good long cork. Decanted an hour ahead. Deep golden colour.
The nose is very rich with intense floral aromas (honeysuckle) as well as sweaty notes (in a good way) upon swirling.
The mouth is possibly a step behind in that it remains slightly more reticent and there are fleeting oxidative flavours; still very good and with excellent acidity.
Drink up soon, I would say, and a repeat purchase. Not too many white Burgundies of that age would be as presentable as this bottle.

  • 13% alcohol. Very good long dense cork with about 4 mm of wine penetration. Carafed 30mn ahead, which was too short. Probably a bit too cold initially too; cellar temperature would have been better.
Lovely rich golden colour. The nose is rich but not at all blowsy, with yellow flowers in evidence. The mouth is slightly stricter, with pleasant yellow plums, good acidity and a slightly bitter touch in the finish (not unpleasant at all). No oak in evidence.
I would put this well ahead of my recent Carbonnieux but probably slightly behind La Louvière. A great companion to our turbot, and a repeat purchase at the appropriate price point (I have a feeling that prices have crept up to dangerous levels since my last purchase). In terms of value, Clos Floridène reigns supreme in the area.

  • 13% alcohol. Very good long dense cork. Light yellow colour. Rich nose with notes of gorse (and the subtly honeyed component that goes with that).
The mouth is just as good, flowery, perfectly dry, long, and supremely balanced. The epitome of elegance in white Pessac. A perfect companion to our black soles.
A repeat purchase certainly, especially as the price was quite reasonable.
It is amusing to see so many people scrambling to acquire very average white Burgundies at inflated prices while ignoring gems from other areas (and I DO like white Burgundy, but it is time to put manners on those producers who are gorging themselves price wise).

  • This is a Cru class blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle from the Pessac-Léognan sub-region of Bordeaux. There are only nine wineries in the 1959 classification for white Graves. Around 11,000 cases of this wine are produced annually, if Wikipedia is to be believed.

Hugh Johnson, in his 1966 classic "Wine" described white Graves as "one of the most popular basic white wines in Britain" which shows how things have changed. He noted "at its best it is dry and full-flavoured and below, somehow not quite clean-cut, having something rather like a hint of vanilla at the end of its taste, the result of ageing in oak casks".

In the glass this is straw yellow, almost verging to a descriptor with the word "golden" in it. The nose is quite ripe and sweet, with a rich element of white peach, lemon pith, and just a touch of butter and honey. The influence of wood is still obvious in the back notes of vanillin. The palate opens quite cool, with a distinct grippy mouthfeel. The finish perhaps slightly short.

    Drink now.
