  • Well, always a monster. Big rich, cinnamon, oak showing through. Might as well drink it up!

  • Getting ready for Valpolicella next weekend. This was a pale red-orange (the color of the sky across a portion of the US on this day...) and opened with a quick double decant. Obviously this quick double decant was not nearly enough as on Day 1 this was quite a heated beast still, as expected. Though, on Day 2, this opened up quick nicely with deep strokes of mellow, aged wood and raisin-y goodness and was much more accessible. Although not as showy, rich, or downright life-changing as some of the other vintages I've had, this was still a Dal Forno and still absolutely delicious.

  • Very nice wine. Lots of cherry. Amazing.

  • On the nose and palate, classic Amarone notes of plums, prunes, black cherries, cassis, sous bois, Xmas cake, incense, raisins, dark chocolate, balsamic and the usual frogs, snails and puppy dog tails that I, alas, wasn’t fully picking up. Opaque almost black, Full bodied, and oh, those thick legs. Buoyant acidity and tannins which were well-balanced by the fruit and secondary notes, no heat but the typical Amarone portiness feel. Boundless complexity, intensity and persistence. Well, as I remember my elementary school teachers saying, someone has to go last, and like the prior tastings when A_M and cyclist generously provided the ‘98 and ‘08 iterations of this cuvée, the DF, sensibly in light of its profile, was it. As always an amazingly delicious and impressively lithe pour all things considered, I could tell that this fit in qualitatively with the earlier bottlings of this I had (and with minimal aeration, seemed more accessible, although it has much life in front of it), but what I couldn’t tell at that point due to palate and physical fatigue was whether it was, for me, a 95 or 99 pointer or something in between. One of these years, I’ll have to spring for one of these, or another Quintarelli and drink it on its own over a few days so I can have a more considered opinion. In the interim, I’ll certainly continue to think of it as one of the most remarkable wines I’ve enjoyed. Thanks, SH, for generously sharing.
