I got invited to a wine tasting at an event that featured Italian wines. While I didn't take any formal notes, this is the wine that stuck out the most. The 2018 Ornellaia is a fruit driven wine that is ready for consumption. The Merlot, and the Cabernet Franc stand out. There is little in the way of tannin's. Drink now or hold.

Quite a step down from the bottle we enjoyed early this year. It was ultra plush and too fruitbomby. May need a few hours of air to blow off some heat as we didn’t decant.

Popped and poured, full bodied, deep ruby, notes of vanilla, mocha, blueberries, cassis with a big tannic finish that lasts over a minute. Built for the long haul. Needs another 5 years to shed its tannins. It will be one of the long lived Ornellaia’s. Not very silky at this stage but very promising. I would guess 3 decades of life ahead at this point of evolution. Blend was 51% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot.

From a half bottle: Dark fruit, leather, and a bit of an herbal note on the nose. Blackberry, plum, peppery spice and a bit of cedar on the complex palate. Moderate silky tannins, medium plus acid, medium body, and a medium to long finish with fruit and spice.

Beautiful ripple plush fruit, velvety glossy layer but not overdone. Open and ready to drink, tastes at 93 on opening. After an hour or two oh my goodness, deep dark and extremely delicous and perfectly balanced. Young Ornellaias can really deliver, this is like the 2015 juicy silky and fun. But… Complexity comes to the patient. And this wine will easily last a decade, probably two.
