Double decanted earlier in the day and drunk over several hours.
Richer, firmer, deep, more structured and youthful than either of the 95's. Tar, iron, and porcini more than fruit and florals. More savory and brooding than the 95's. On the palate, more iron, tar, and meaty bouillon notes take center stage form the fruit at this point. This is powerful, yet poised, beautifully balanced, and very long. This is an extremely well put together cohesive wine and has a ton more to give in time. It grew and gained complexity with more air. If I had any bottles, I would hold for 5-10 years. Magic awaits. 96++

The nose displayed an attractive mix of minerals, dusty red fruits, spice, and iron, all with a savory leaning. On the palate, I found dark, bitter red fruits and minerals with earth tones and inner florals. It finished on fresh herbs, minerals and earth, with a coating of gruff tannin that saturated the senses. As is often the case with Otin Fiorin, I have to wonder if it just needs more time to truly show it’s potential.

1996 Barolo & Barbaresco Blind (L'Apicio, NYC): [Double decanted at 11am.] Black fruit, tar and licorice nose. Amazingly sweet, tannic, and complex. Simply a great young wine. Great length and complexity. Wow. Just wow. 96-98

Cappellano Vertical (Lusardi’s Restaurant, NYC): [Double-decanted at noon.] Incredibly long black cherries. Stunning nose. An incredible wine with a terrific future. I can only hope to drink this again in 20 years. WOTN for me. 98-100.
