Dinner at S.K.Y. (Chicago, IL): I bought this bottle many years ago for a song and a dance, and to be honest am slightly saddened to see the recent price escalations for this most special of Barolos. I opened this briefly before dinner, and didn't do too much by way of oxygenating it, as I was slightly concerned it wouldn't hold up. There's a mild hint of volatile acidity on the nose here, but it's not obtrusive. The fruit here is definitely of a more pruney, slightly overripe quality, though there isn't the dried/roasted element. Perhaps the best way to put it is to say it's a slight bit brown. The palate isn't the cleanest either -- there is a bit of funk here, and there's a very slight hint of soy (perhaps the fault of the bottle more than the wine, but this bottle came from a very, very good source). There is a little more alcohol on the back end here than I'd like as well. More of an interesting wine, given the historical context, but not as much in terms of outright enjoyment.

Classic aged Barolo. Brownish Red color which tells you that this puppy is fully mature. On the palette the wine is ripe with flavors of dusty mulberry with a silky (and just slightly) acidic mouthfeel. I get oregano, and some spice on the nose with a silky mouthfeel.

Some pretty fruit and perfume a bit of tar and savory but lots of heat on palate.
