At first I wasn’t sure about this ev n allowing my for th excellence of the producer. However with time in the glass (30 minutes+) it really began to shine. Lush with tropical fruit but plenty of acidity and a lengthy finish.

Lunch at La Trompette: Quite a divisive wine. On paper this was supposedly one of the most Burgundian Californian whites but it wasn’t the case here. Some reductiveness on the nose, oak influence was palpable on both nose and palate, round tropical fruits. Didn’t mind this as I thought it was quite well-made without being soulless but some didn’t like it so much.

Dinner with Melvin (Noize): Half a bottle left-over from lunchtime. Fairly shy on the nose, with some greenish notes. Creamy, fluid and herbal, the zing of lime juice on the midpalate, and a persistent, grippy, exotically-fruited finish. Full-bodied but had plenty of acidity to maintain balance. We all enjoyed it.

Melvin's La Trompette Lunch (La Trompette, Chiswick, London): Smoke vanilla yellow fruits on the nose. Medium to full bodied and substantial mouthfeel with veneer of quality oak, yet it is otherwise a well balanced wine with fresh acidity and seems to all fit together and is quite charming. I am generally oak adverse except this seems to work. Could only really ever be a Cali Chard.

I was a little surprised. I really like the Ramey wines but this came across as very lean and a bit astringent. Definitely had the citrus notes but it was not balanced. Also the finish was fairly short. I did give this time to open and warm but it never came around. Will see if next bottle is better after a few years.
