  • 2019 vintage. Deep garnet. Forest floor, wet oak leaves jump out first followed by strawberries, orange peel, cocoa nibs. Morello cherries. Opens to iron rich myoglobin. There is a lot going on. High minus acid and super super fine tannin delivers precision. More underripe strawberry, cherry, currant. All kept in check by the acid.

Long finish. Tannins hold at the end… w/ the pH, long lifespan on this one. Excellent wine. Very reminiscent of Rocheux from Le Cadeau in OR. High praise indeed.

    Nice, simple, elegant packaging, too.

  • During a MOT Gantenbein Masterclass. Martha and Daniel, who single-handedly created the first high quality Swiss Wine of World renown, starting 40 years ago, walked through their Kaizen approach of work, clonal selection, vineyard and Cuvée mgmt. The wines were consistently of high quality. I wish there were more Gantenbeins in the Swiss wine landscape, especially the Romandie.
TN: Expressive nose of red cherry, again bacon, just a touch of tertiary notes. Much lighter than the 2018, more like the 2017, but also very good. 93+

  • Opened in Courchevel. P&P and enjoyed slowly.

This was more yielding than the 2017 I had about 1.5 years ago, and pleasantly surprising in that way. Mostly showing red fruits, already quite expressive and sweet on the nose and palate too. Enjoyable to drink but didn't quite get too much complexity, even though this is quite bold on the palate, well made and very clean.

There's a lot of hype around Gantenbein and it's undoubtedly good, but I'm not sure if it's worth the price these days. There are comparable village burgs for much less. A pleasure to drink if offered but unsure if I'll deliberately seek this out unless I happen to be in Ch or around the area. Always a pleasure though to try something with G & M!

  • Whole cluster nose / darker fruit. Pot pourri. Palate does not quite follow through on the nose.

  • Light ruby pink with violet hue. Nose upon opening somewhat brett, metallic. Evolving into petrol, pepper, kirsch, grilled meat. It’s got an alcoholic strong note of vapor. Foreshadowing a structured and strong wine. Rich kirsch-cherry, slight vanilla showing oak, brambles, etc. Needs decanting for 1+ hour for sure. Long life ahead. Very nice and surely collectible in the panoply of Swiss producers.
