  • Tasted double blind. Very hard to point at what grape or wine this could be. Was a bit strange aroma wise and from its texture but I found it highly intriguing. In addition, the aromatic precision was very high. I would have love to follow the wine over a few hours as I think it could have been a great wine (but not a crowd pleaser).

TN: Intense and expressive from the first sniff to the quite long finish. Loads of smoke and meaty notes, some herbs, ripe red fruit, herbs but above all smoky and meaty notes. Fairly round tannins, good acidity, but overall still with a slightly muscular feel. Quite intense, long finish.

  • Blind tasting dinner. Wow, what a unicorn bottle, hard to come by, nice to have friends who bring interesting and rare stuff. This wine was alive and kicking after 30 years. Lots of structure, earthy and dark fruit, guesses around the table included Pinot and Cote Rotie. Well done team Gantenbein, shows that their wine can age.

  • 3. ever produced gantenbein vintage.
this was once in a lifetime experience even if the wine wasn't that interesting in itself.

on the nose barnyard and pepper, cold tobacco, leather and some smoke. over all very tertiary. after some minutes it fell apart and lost its structure, which is not at all surprising as those wines were not made to age back then.

  • Tasted blind. A fragile aroma profile with surprisingly alluring notes of sweet pipe tobacco, cotton candy fruit, barnyard and spice. Unfortunately, the palate was too wild, slightly disjointed with rather rough acidity. A unicorn and amazing opportunity to have tasted a wine 5 years older than the oldest vintage available on the market, but the pleasure factor was pretty limited.
