Neutral on this one. Thought they told me it was the Brunello and i was really disappointed, lack of verve, richness, a bit thin and tart, old barrel, cherry skin. Then found out it was the rosso. OK,makes sense now. At Wine Market Party in Ebisu Park Mall Blind Tasting Bar, Tokyo.

I hadn’t expected to open one of these for a year or three, giving the wine a de facto long rest based on reputation. But, based on a prior community tasting note and recent bottles of 2018 Montevertine Pian rosso, I opened one.
This wine has been described as Burgundian and it opens a little thin, almost a taste of water like a Pinot during a dump phase. Committed now, I decanted the montalcino and set aside. As expected, some volume swept into the wine and a fine tannin backbone held a pallet of red fruits. But not much else, nothing complex here and some raisin crept into the back pallet over the hour or so we drank it.
None of this suggests more development over time. Perhaps a flaw of the vintage over running the reputation of the producer.
For a $100+ wine, not a recommended QPR.
Braised short ribs, celeriac mashed potatoes, glazed carrots.

Cherry on the nose, very clean wine. Very very subtle complexity after a little air. Very pleasurable Rosso to drink now. Shows some age and may be peaking earlier than you expected. We plan to drink the rest of ours this year.

Bright, bitter cherry, hibiscus nose. Tight, not giving much complexity yet. Touch of leather. The texture is very silky for Sangiovese, due to the famous clone of Biondi Santi before the recent purchase, which I believe the 2018 still is made from. BBS 11 Clone

PnP. This was an exceptionally enjoyable rosso di montalcino. Very intense nose of cherry, a little earth and maybe some herbs. Mouthfeel was very silky and elegant, with red cherries and some minerality. Incredibly smooth. It did lack complexity. Essentially it’s an incredibly pure expression of cherry with a Burgundian mouthfeel, which is great, but there’s not a lot more going on. I got this on sale for about half its usual price, which I would say was a bargain. At its full retail price, there are pretty decent brunellos you can buy and there are incredible Rossos you can buy for a lot less, so I’m not sure where this fits in terms of qpr, but it was a really enjoyable bottle.
