  • Fully mature, this is a lovely Bordeaux, but not one of the heavy hitters from 1982. It needs just a splash decant, but does need to be allowed to develop in the glass for 15 to 20 minutes to shrug off harsher notes. The nose is glorious and deep with tertiary notes of cherry liquor, blackcurrant, and old leather and worthy of a 95/96 rating. Likewise, the experience of the wine front palate is pure class with an initial silky mouthfeel. However, it starts to fall apart towards the end and on the finish, and becomes unbalanced and harsh. The finish is decent, but tannic notes make you wish it would end. The real mystery is how its Paulliac neighbour Lalande managed to create in the same year possibly the greatest wine of all time. However, it is a good solid mature Bordeaux from one of the greatest vintages.

  • Opened in HK. P&P and enjoyed over a few hours from the bottle.

Upon first pour and a few minutes of air, this really blindsided me. Really fruity, including red fruits - quite fresh and drinking beautifully. Tannins integrated but still bright and not tired. At that point, probably 93+.

However, after a while it turned a corner and started falling apart, becoming quite tertiary. Standard old Bordeaux. Back down to 90-91 for me. Thus I've tried to pick somewhere in the middle that reflects the experience.

Would drink up, and drink quickly if you open these.

  • Vinetasters: Old Cabernet (Park Ridge, IL): Served double blind. Older nose, with a woodsy quality to it. Clearly Bordeaux with relatively youthful fruit and a nice acid backbone and structure. The tannins are fully resolved. My 5th, group's 5th.

  • This was enjoyable and easy to drink, but it was carrying a slight taint, and unfair to rate. With a healthy bottle I would venture a 93. Not one of vintage's legends, but a solid hitter. Also I do get the feeling that structurally this does not have legs for longer aging.
