  • Unlike many 18’s (Monvigliero included) this and the San Lorenzo are mouth puckering astringent. Nice bright red fruit, savory dark, mint and rose come through but so does a massive wall of acid/tannin. Lay this down at least 5 years. Still a good value but in need of patience.

  • Festa dal Barolo AM tasting

Darker fruited, savory, with nettle, balsam, violets and medicinal mountain herbs. Midweighted with a terrific mix of savory, fruit, and herbal notes. Finishes with firm fine tannins. Really beautiful balance. 93

  • La Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): The 2018 Barolo Gramolere is unexpectedly rich and fruit-focused on the nose, with crushed black cherries, shavings of cedar and dried roses forming its bouquet. It’s soft-textured and pure in style with mineral-tinged red fruits and savory spice. The 2018 tapers off wonderfully fresh with an almost-mentholated sensation, as grippy tannins are nicely balanced by a twang of residual acidity. This may not possess the usual power of Gramolere, but instead impresses with its graceful character and balance. Well done.

  • La Festa del Barolo: Masterclass (and burgers) (The Pool/Grill): I am noticing that there is a tendency on the nose for the very floral notes (which verge on the edge of handsoap to me). You can see some of the Monforte here but I can also I find some of the Verduno influence. It’s a bit lighter weight than some wines of that region. A bit more elegant in style. The person sitting next to me said he thought this had the most Burgundian influence on all of the wines. I can see that a bit as I look back across them.

  • La Festa del Barolo 2023: The '18 Gramolere is one of the more intense wines I've tasted in 2018. There seemed to be a bit of a mismatch between the aromatics and palate, as I found the aromatics wide open whereas the palate was fairly stern and intense at this stage, while not showing much sweetness of fruit, so I'm not sure how this one will age.

The nose is nicely perfumed with fresh mint, minerality, red berry fruit, citrus peel, and exotic, red floral tones. On the palate, it seems like a serious wine with good structure and depth, with dark red fruit, citrus, and spice tones, quite meaty and dark in expression, without a ton of primary fruit and lacking sweetness. It came across sort of brutal on the palate. The finish is short, despite the fairly intense showing on the first sip.
