  • Magnum best bottle (Restaurant Holz und Feuer, Kirchheim, Germany): Glass: Sophienwald Bordeaux
From Magnum. Clear, medium ruby-garnet color. Fine Pinot nose with some warm red fruit.
You can feel the warm vintage, but even if the acidity is not that high, it handles the 14,5% abv very well. Pinot at its full peak. Sweet, warm fruit, marzipan, beautiful velvet texture, long, fruity finish. Drink now. 93-94

  • Donatsch Unique Pinot Noir Complete Vertical (Dolder Grand, Zurich): Tasted at the Matter of Taste Zurich Complete Donatsch Unique Pinot Noir Vertical (2000-2019, all from Magnum) Masterclass. Martin Donatsch pointed out that this was a hot and dry vintage. He felt that acidity was missing on, however.

    Tasting note:
A very pure, hedonistic wine showing sweet red berry and rhubarb, a fine smokey layer and mineral notes. The palate was settled, but still felt young. Soft texture and I felt there was sufficient acidity, actually. This is an incredibly appealing wine, presenting itself with a carefree lightness. In a great spot right now with quite a few years of life left.

  • All 20 Vintages of Donatsch Pinot Noir Unique: Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to taste all vintages ever produced of this top Swiss Pinot Noir. All from magnum. A few obeservations: A) The structural frames are exceptional. Superb tannin quality, high, and perfectly-integrated acidity, lots of finesse and a weightless feel in all vintages. B) These wines are made to age. Only the 2002 was over-the-hill, most other showed young(-ish) from magnum and will have a long life ahead. Only the first vintage (2000) showed tertiary/peakish. C) The wines start drinking quite well from the age of 12-15 years. The younger ones from the 2010 vintage onwards were more about the potential with many even a bit closed. D) There's a jump in complexity with the 2004 vintage. Most (open) wines show beautifully complex, very well delinated, pure and Burgundian in style with a well-measured touch of sexiness.

TN: Not overly expressive nose at first, with more time a bit more open but never as expressive as the palate.. On the palate you can sense the hot vintage with much riper fruit than usual but still clearly remaining on the good side of things at first and only with a lot more time in the glass showing a bit more raisiny notes. Sweet and sexy, herbs and minerality, a beautiful creaminess. Not super complex but very precise and great to drink. A hedonistic vintage which I would not decant. 93+ pts at the beginning (91 pts towards the end).
