Appearance: Ruby red with edging slightly towards brick red. Nose: Jammy in a nice, fruity and clean way, no over-boiled jammienes here. Sweet, dark fruits. With air some earthiness and quite a bit of leather come through. Palate: Soft and rounded like velvet. Mature but fully alive, no off or dry notes. Medium to medium rich body, slightly sweet fruit, nicely balancing acidity with some tannins discretely playing 3rd violin. Summary: Mature, some complexity and very, very drinkable. Totally "á point" now and.... well, just velvety. Or silky, if you prefer. With a lovely bouquet.
I suspect this may have more to give after airing so will keep half in a sealed bottle in the fridge and revisit tomorrow. 15.05.2016: No big changes. The nose has lost a little of the jam and put on a bit more earthiness and leather, but it's very much the same wine as two nights ago. That also goes for the taste, which has held up nicely but is now showing the first signs of fading. Still a very lovely drink though and I'd say the nose is in the 90+ range.

Had a magnum of another vintage a number of years ago and this wine didn't impress then but this bottle I've left to age and it was much more balanced - some bricking and being from Victoria lighter than most of the jammy Barossa Shiraz . Plenty of fruit . Lacked some length but very pleasant .

Light brick red, bordering on tawny, with rather fine sediments, anticipating some rather soft tannins reflecting its age. Somewhat muted upon opening but blooms after a hour's decanting- soft cherry notes, light stewed fruits (pears, sour apricots) on the nose. Silky tannins, with moderate fruit, some smoke, tobacco and cigar-box flavours. Prominent tea notes with just a hint of licorice. On the light side for an aussie shiraz, but quite delicate, tall and elegant. Some transparency and focus, with a lingering finish of nashi pear, guava and pine cupboard in the lengthy after-taste. Possibly past it's peak, but still really quite pleasant and approachable, feminine and blooming in the glass over time.

Smooth, solid, smells nice. Not a heap of depth but unbeatable value.

NobleRottersSydney - Tahbilk Shiraz vertical (Lucio's, Paddington): The 1996 is quite muted in its red berry flavours. The palate offers quite strong grape-derived tannins, with good interplay of structural components in a medium-bodied way.
