This was a nice suprise. I opened 3 different wines last night (1997 D2 from DeLille and 2006 Lachini Pinot) and this was the best of the three. Mediun body and color so it is showing its age, however still a very pleasent drinker. Spicy nose but softer on the palet.

Surprisingly youthfull purple color. Nose of dark fruits, leather, and licorice. There was a brief moment where this wine seemed a little floral, but it faded very fast. Flavors of currants, earth, and some faded spices. Medium bodied wine, with a very smooth mouthfeel and a long finish. This wine is probably on the decline since it did not have anywhere near the spice, pop or acidity of later vintages of Doyenne that we have tasted, but I wouldn't call it over the hill by any means.

My first tasting of the 1997 Doyenne, not sure why I didn’t open it up sooner. The initial hour was a little closed and showed a predominantly “fruit juice” profile, but after an hour, this seemed to subside and you get notes of cassis, and blackberry. The nose was always subdued, but there is some nice textured and layered fruit, spice and some violets. Decant for at least thirty minutes, but I suspect this wines better days have past. Time to drink up.

Medium bodied. Some brett on the nose. Not a ton going on.
