I believe this was decanted prior to tasting but can't recall. Served by my buddy Haslam at his 40th birthday party. Light red color. On nose, pipe tobacco, sweet cherry, dirt & cranberry. Didn't note flavor profile but most likely consistent with palate. Impeccable balance and this was great on it' own or with grilled Filet Mignon. My favorite out of 5 very strong bottles of red wine. 94-95 range. Best wine I've had in 2017 to date.
This wine and the Leoville Barton were much more enjoyable to me than the other 3, although "rating" wise the others are only 1-3 points behind given all of these bottles are well made wine!
Food (Network, Da Umberto) & Wine (Chelsea Market, Da Umberto): Drank side by side with a 2000 and the 2000 was just in the better spot. This was nice though. Has that wonderful aged characteristic that I like. Muted leather, maybe shoe polish, hints of caramel. Opened up over time and was nice, but definitely time to drink up.

Dinner at l'Artusi (w/Sam's friends: Marcus (his 39th bday), his wife Shannon; Theo and MJ; John and Casey; Cliff and Morgan; and Gautaum) (West Village, New York City): Bricked ruby. Nose of stewed tomato and cabbage, cedar, black pepper -- quirky, to say the least! But pretty delicious... The palate is round and -- surprisingly -- very fine. Sweet, with a balsamic volatile acidic edge that is really nice and mouthwatering. Herbs. Impressive purity. Another fascinating old wine tonight. Terrific length. Very, very good. (I picked what I think this was based on CT priors; nobody had any idea what it was and I don't have a photo, though my note does say "maybe Merlot? It's unclear; nobody knows")

This was a glass pour at Fig in Charleston (superb restaurant with a very thoughtful and reasonable wine list). A bit cloudy and definitely smelled like an old wine with leather, earth and goudron. I would have guessed this was old Nebbiolo with a little less spine than most. Some Christmas spice character emerged with time. This is definitely better than the 1989 I had recently, but I have preferred the younger versions (ie 1998).

another great showing of this bottle. classically rustic, fine tannin, showing black cherry and just a hint of pruned fruit. on the nose there is leather dusty mocha and dried clay. this wine stylistically pushes all of my hot buttons!
