Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • This was either in a really dumb phase or mildly corked. It was dominated by tannin and wood notes, with little help from offsetting fruit. Dark red. Perhaps the fruit is in hiding, or maybe the wine is simply hopelessly out of balance. Fortunately I have only one more bottle which I will leave alone for another 5 or so years in hopes of something nice emerging.

(1er Cru GEVREY Dugat-Py) Dugat-Py Dear Friends, While we were snowed-in, the ultimate stocking stuffer arrived - our parcel of Dugat-Py. As it usually is, each wine is EXTREMELY LIMITED and the 2006 vintage is even more allocated than 2005 (it's the most allocated vintage since we introduced the wines with the 1996 campaign). In 2006, the quality reaches a new level of transparency for the Domaine and Bernard Dugat believes his 2006 portfolio demonstrates a classic display of Burgundian terroir throughout the range - the wines are nearly the equal of 2005, just a different style. Where other vintages at Dugat-Py veer toward Syrah (and remain controversial), in 2006 they actually taste like stunning examples of Pinot Noir. With that in mind, Bernard has fashioned the finest Evocelles, Coeur du Roi and Gevrey VV of his career - three wines often overlooked by collectors (I believe he would agree with that statement). The Charmes-Chambertin is also incredible in 2006. As far as prices, I'm sure you can find all of these cheaper elsewhere but the provenance is second to none (directly from the source) and the US allocation is a fraction of what it was last year - there is no incentive for sources to discount (especially at the upper end). Only 10 cases of the upper end wines came to the US this year (for the whole country, including restaurants) versus 30 last year. While most of the US is ignoring the entire 2006 Burgundy vintage (both red and white) this is one portfolio you may want to take a close look at. From a collectable standpoint, Dugat-Py remains at the very highest level. Unlike Bordeaux, the finest Burgundy wines are produced in such small quantities that rarity (and subsequent investment value) is almost assured. In addition (I say this every year to no avail), please do not order these based on scores, try to select them based on their vineyard, style or persona. Today's score has little relevance to the eventual pleasure you will derive 10-20 years down the road when a bottle is uncorked. I am printing the scores because everyone will ask but I am also advising you to read the verbiage and consider other factors besides a wine receiving one more point than another... Keep in mind, when doing research, this is not "Dugat" this is "Dugat-Py" (as an example, Dugat's 2005 Charmes is $249): 2006 Dugat-Py Bourgogne Rouge (BH N/R) 2006 Dugat-Py Bourgogne "Halinard" (BH N/R) 2006 Dugat-Py Pommard "La Levrieres" Vieilles Vignes (BH N/R) 2006 Dugat-Py Charmes-Chambertin (BH92-95) 2006 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru (BH90-92) 2006 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin 1er "Lavaux St. Jacques" (BH91-94) 2006 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin 1er "Champeaux" (BH91-93) 2006 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin 1er "Petite-Chapelle" (BH90-93) 2006 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin "Coeur de Roi" Tres Vieilles Vignes (BH89-92) 2006 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin "Evocelles" (BH89-91) 2006 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes (BH88-90) 2006 Dugat-Py Mazis-Chambertin (BH93-95) 2006 Dugat-Py Mazoyeres-Chambertin (BH92-94) 2006 Vosne-Romanee Vieilles Vignes (BH89-92) PLEASE BE PATIENT WITH FINAL ALLOCATIONS - Niki will do her best to accommodate everyone.
