  • Initial oxidative nose that took an hour to blow off. Nice old barolo.

  • bottle and fill excellent. Cork was slightly depressed, but came out intact. This bottle was a little past best with a slight background cork taint. Light red / orange with some citrus and goudron, light body, still tannic. Probably best after 2 -3 hours decanting, but not up to the usual standards of the old wines from this producer (pre- Chiara Boschis)

  • A classic Pira Barolo by Luigi Pira (NB: not the same as Azienda Luigi Pira!), from the era before the estate was sold to the Boschis family in 1981.

The translucent, luminous, Campari-like ruby color of the wine does not betray its 50 years of age. The nose is sweet and fragrant with aromas of maraschino cherries, red druits dried with age, some interesting creamy characteristics, a light floral touch of roses and a sweet lift of balsamic VA. The wine feels medium-to-full-bodied and somewhat developed on the palate with high acidity and moderate, still rather firm and grippy tannins. The wine feels almost bone-dry, even though there are some strawberry jam notes amidst the flavors of sour cherries, bitter spices, light red currants and hints of tar and earth. There is also a faint off note of something metallic, but fortunately not strong enough to distract from the beautiful Nebbiolo fruit. The finish is developed, yet still quite tannic and grippy with layered flavors of sour cherries, roasted spices, some dried dark cherries, a little bit of tar and a hint of sour plums.

A lovely old Barolo. Not anything truly spectacular nor anything that would set this wine apart from most of the other old Baroli of the same age. However, you can still feel the remarkable 1967 vintage here as this wine is still standing firmly in its sneakers, unlike so many Baroli from the surrounding vintages. All in all, this is really good stuff and definitely drinking beautifully now, but it is also somewhat predictable - the wine tastes exactly how you'd expect a Barolo taste at 50 years of age, but with very little of anything that would make this wine stand out from a crowd of other 1967's. Highly recommended, nevertheless. Probably won't benefit from further cellaring, but can still keep for several years more, easily.

  • Tight and austere when first poured, soon opened up and was surprisingly generous, soft and very enjoyable
