  • A bit of an odd one, this wines comes through pretty big. The hot vintage of '03 has provided this wine with pretty high ripeness levels of deep almost brooding ripe black cherry, plums and blackberry compote. Immensely powerful and deep on the nose with well integrated oak and some lovely earthiness. However, the delicacy of a higher quality Burgundy seems to be getting slightly lost in this hot vintage. Structurally it's still holding together well despite the high alcohol but I don't suspect it to improve in any way with more age. I would drink it sooner rather than later. Overall it's still a lovely wine but not exactly what you'd expect from a NSG 1er Cru in my opinion.

  • Ripe, rich, Long. Marked by vintage but not flabby. Still showing dark red fruits with some complexity. I didn’t pick up much wood or tannins as I did with the last bottle. Drinking very well now with no signs of decline but doubt this has enough acidity for Long aging - if I had more I’d be drinking them now.

  • Vertical Tasting of Chevillon and Gouges Nuits St. Georges Les St. Georges 2015-1990 (San Francisco): Deep ruby. Curious combination of baked fruit and some mintiness. Sweet, ripe, liqueur-like, some heat, but creditable acidity that I didn't necessarily expect. Drier, tannic finish. Lots going on here in a pretty disjointed package, and no shrinking violet this. Could it possibly get better from here? I have no idea but wouldn't hesitate to drink it now with strong cheeses, for example.

  • I echo my previous notes -- ripeness of '03 with structure of Gouges -- but bump the rating up a bit as this shows more. Deep black fruit on the nose and in the mouth -- I get blackberries distinctly -- with brambly, slightly woody (not in a bad way) tannins providing structure. This wine is the farthest down the bass register I've had in a burgundy. Good length, great depth, the tannins kick in midway and then finish it, but there's an aftertaste of the inky black fruit that lingers long after. Tastes like this wine is from old vines and/or tiny, concentrated berries but that may well be the vintage talking. The ripeness is there, but not cloying or particularly stewed in character. Plus it's balanced by the tannins, for now. Long-term, the relatively low acidity may stand in the way of long aging, but for now the wine is nicely approachable, with plenty of tannins to suggest another 10 years of aging (if the low acidity isn't a problem). If the wine retains balance as it ages and the tannins integrate, it will make it to a 92-93 pointer for me. So far, this and the Benjamin Leroux-regisseured Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux are the wines of the 2003 vintage for me.

  • Upon first decant, it a bit of a dusty nose, deep ruby red, no signs of bricking, and a tart, if pleasant taste. Still fruity, with cranberry or apple tartness with a hint of a deeper plum. Some dusty tannins perhaps, but approachable and integrated. Went well with our beef stew, but wouldn't pair this with anything sweet.

(Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges) Very dark red violet color; nice tart cherry, tart raspberry, ripe berry, roasted red berry nose; atypical, ripe berry, tart berry, charcoal, dried berry palate with dusty and sweet tannins, that starts to take on stewed fruit characteristics after 45 minutes or so in the glass; medium-plus finish (needs 6-8 years)

(Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges) Lovely deep, sexy, black fruit and boysenberry nose; tight but lovely dark fruit and well-integrated oak; medium finish
