One of the WOTN from a shootout of 14 bottles of NSG. This was the youngest and it wowed everyone. Several jokes about finally the Gouges is ready to drink! Was a bit shut down on opening, but blossomed with air. Great aromatic nose of fruit, floral and earth. Medium-weight dark red fruits on the palate - cherry and raspberry with some plum, woven through with dark earth, dried herbs, hint of old wood, but seamless and complex. Plenty of structure, nicely resolved tannins and still youthful after 30+ years. Wonderful.

Still was still quite tight and needed a good amount of air. The nose is on the darker fruit spectrum with fragrant, meaty notes. The palate is still surprisingly tannic and structural with dark cherries and red fruit notes. Quite long on the finish. A lovely beast of a wine that could use another 10+ years in the cellar.

Vertical Tasting of Chevillon and Gouges Nuits St. Georges Les St. Georges 2015-1990 (San Francisco): Red with fading meniscus. Beautiful maturing aromas of red fruits and forest floor. Positively supple, elegant feel for Gouges with sweet red fruit attack, that inimitable drop of citrus, moderate acidity, and little tannin. The least mineral and earthy of all the Gouges wines today. Lovely, and it may be the most ready to drink, not to mention seductive, wine I've ever had from this producer. The 3 vintages represented in this flight provided quite a roller coaster, with this being one of the overall highlights of the tasting.

Birthday dinner at Sichuan Douhua. Medium to dark red. Very powerful nose, with dark currants, berries, smoke, tar, blood and iron. This was deep, intense, thick and ripe. Power over elegance. Palate was structured, dark fruits, dense and rough on the edges. It takes some appreciation, but this was close to my wine of the night for its freshness, power, ripeness and viscosity. It went really well with the suckling pig and duck. Now I completely understand why Gouges wines need time. At 25 years, this is still an infant. Will only hit its prime at age 35 or above.

Poor ullage and almost undrinkable. Not a good era for Gouges.
