  • Tomato leaf, meaty and savoury with umami; mushroom, a little tarragon, red plums, leather. Juicy tending to medium plus intensity acidity, talc textured tannins are slightly drying, slightly tart red fruits, plums, savoury, very slightly bitter on the finish but persists very long, nice in a savoury way but quite forward for me.

  • Decent aged Bordeaux. A bit soft and boring for my liking.

Nose is not too intense and dominated by pencil shavings and oak, no fruit, certainly smells quite old. Flavor is very different. Black fruits still quite fresh with a really round, milk chocolatey flavor. Rarely do you have such notable malo. Plush tannins, medium body. Just enough acid to keep it from being flabby and no more. Length a bit disappointing.

Would probably go well with a creamy cheese. Less well with the gnocchi I had it with.

  • Bordeaux 2004 - 20 Years On - 33 Reds: All wines tasted blind, not decanted. Observations: 1) 2004 is a mediocre vintage overall, with many pleasant wines, but without the depth of better years. 2) At the top, the vintage produced some classic, old-school wines with lots of freshness and fresh fruit. 3) At the lower end, many wines lacked fruit and ripe tannins, resulting in some astringent and slightly drying wines. 4) An alarming number of Right Bank wines (5 out of 16, no Left Bank wine) were oxidized, including some heavyweights like Petrus, Evangile or Figeac. An unacceptably high proportion of faulty wines. 5) I’m not sure that the 2004 are currently in a good phase, many of my scores were lower than in previous tastings. The question is if it’s just a weaker phase or the beginning of the end. 6) At the top and the only wine >95pts was a layered Le Pin (rated 96pts), with a charming Vieux Chateau Certan, a surprising Issan and Clos l'Eglise, as well as an elegant Lafite sharing second place (all rated 94pts).

TN: Expressive and quite intense from start to finish, this wine showed lots of blue and red fruit at the core, with layers of herbs and minerality around it. Some earthy notes too as well as some oak notes. The substance here was higher than with most other wines. Fine tannins, good freshness and only a bit of heat towards the finish, diminishing the experience. With time in the glass, the oak became a bit more prominent and others found it too oaky, but this heavy use of oak provided the substance the vintage didn’t provide the grapes.

  • Much better bottle than the last one. Didn’t decant for too long. Blackish crimson dense color. Nose of blackberries, perfumed raspberries, milk chocolate, brambles, plums, some cola. Delicious on the palate very broad, lots of finesse for an 04, great acidity and balance mid palate, lots of perfumed black, blue and dark red fruits, decent and fat finish with tannins well cloaked by the richness of fruit. Very hedonistic wine.

  • Splash decanted and served 3 hours later. Absolutely a point. Rich, luxurious and deep red and black fruit. Good length. By far, the best showing from my case.

(Chateau Clos L'Eglise Pomeral) #1; COLOR-great color; NOSE-soapy component; some really nice subtle underlying green components (asparagus); beautiful cherry juice & Cinnamon on the back-end; recommend letting this decant for an hour or two; should do well w/ age; TASTE-this is massively explosive wine; extremely good; the polish & the elegance of the mouthfeel; this is absolute purity on the mouthfeel; beautiful black licorice; gorgeous black plum on the mid-palate; very dry; very complex; the tannins are very big, but Sweet as heck which will please the crowd; RP-91; WS-91; DK-94; GV-94
