  • Has a rich, brambly black fruit nose with herbal notes. On the bigger, fruitier side, as would be expected from the vintage. Rather Californian. That said, it has aged well, and is certainly not an overripe, extracted mess. Kirsch, anise, black raspberry, pomegranate; fairly smooth and surprisingly un-tannic, finishing with some cedar notes. My major complaint, besides not really speaking of its place, is the lack of acidity and freshness. But very enjoyable and a good value for the $30 I paid at release.

  • Light to medium bodied. Strawberries and some secondary development. This has a drying finish and the tannins haven't resolved at the same pace as the fruit. Surprising that the heat wave didn't generate more generous fruit.

  • Dark and full-bodied, in keeping with the heat wave year. Manages to maintain some freshness with acidity in the background. Tannins are a bit drying. Licorice and plums, not very traditional Pinot characteristics.

  • Light bricking. Nose is almost pungent. No oxidization at all, just mature complex fruit. Decayed leaves, soy sauce, cow stable and a touch of vitamin pills. Sweet attack, but on the midpalate it is surprisingly fresh and succulent. The fat fruit is gone and it has transformed into a concentrated well balanced mature wine. We have underrated the 2003 I think!

  • This bottle does show the vintage; deeply colored; overly ripe flavors, smokey and savory; HUGE, new world-ish.
