  • Translucent medium-ruby. Deep nose of potent smoky plum, healthy damp cellar, late-arriving but nostril-filling violets, astringent brambles, earth. Layers of brilliant crunchy cherry and raspberry fruit girded by iron and earthy briar on the ebullient palate. Firm tannin counterpointed by fresh, almost brash acidity. Long finish of echoing red berry, iron granules, fine earth. Young, energetic wine brimming with life. Long evolution ahead.

  • On the nose, this has a fair bit of Burgundian stank. Lots of decaying vegetation and mushroomy notes. A hint of geosmin and a little rotty, but it isn't as off-putting as it might sound. The palate is large-scaled, with plenty of tannin and a fair bit of ripe fruit as well. This could use more time to soften the palate, but at the same time, it's already almost too autumnal.

  • Chevillon Survey (Brasserie Margeuax): My least favorite Chevillon in the whole line up. This wine is a miss. The aromas are over-ripe and muddled. Palate is rich and forward, but with no nuance and lacking balance. Bottle seemed sound. Just not a great wine.

  • Chevillon study (Chicago, IL): Not sure if this has just not evolved well or something -- it's riddled with dirty and geosmin rot (think beetroot). The palate is hollow and muddy, and shows some rot taint as well.

  • A pretty, accessible, floral and dark-red fruit dominated aroma, with a strong topnote of spice, woodsmoke, and dark earth.

On the palate, the immediate impression is a wide expression of juicy midweight dark cherry and blood orange, supple and giving. Yet there is a certain lack in the midpalate, admittedly quickly forgotten due to the swirl of fruit and earth flavors, yet I would like to see more depth and texture there to make this truly outstanding. .

Quite a contrast to the 2004 Chevillon NSG Perrieres from yesterday, which was not nearly so fleshy and broad and had more high-toned red fruit, and high acidity.

I see the 2004 as lasting longer than this 2006, but never being so welcoming.

This wine is enjoyable to drink now.
