Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 4/15/2023 & rated 94 points: Pergole Torte Vertical tasting (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany): Glass: Zalto Universal and Burgundy
Tasted blind. Clear, useful deep ruby-garnet color. Very fine, harmonious nose with lots of red fruit.
High, ripe acidity, high, fine tannin that still needs time. Beautiful concentrated red fruit, very balanced, very fresh and reductive. Long and fruity finish. This wine needs 10+ years. 94++
We guessed this as Pergole 19 and were so amazed to see that it was actually 2004 and was even better than the 2004 Pergole. Such a surprise, such an amazing wine in the making! (933 views)
Tasted by cephomer on 12/25/2021 & rated 94 points: Drank last nite for xmas eve at the Pollacks. Dark ruby red core, no age apparent. Generous nose of black cherries, tobacco and tar. Medium to full body, still with a solid mix of black and red berry fruit, good concentration, woodsy elements and spice. I noticed a good amount of sour cherries, with notes of tobacco, espresso and some tar. Excellent length with forest floor notes on the back end/finish. Tannins are light to moderate, and mostly non-intrusive. Lovely wine that has matured nicely. (1227 views)
Tasted by JohnMcIlwain on 8/14/2021: I bought a mess of these wines back in the day (before Martino Manetti sadly decided to go all racist-uncle online). This is aging finely. Ripe cherry fruit, iron, and fine-grained tannins, good acidity and some developing bottle bouquet. Plenty left in the tank. Plenty of class and brio (to the wine, at least). (1531 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 1/16/2021 & rated 94 points: A blend of Sangioveto (90%) and Canaiolo (10%), aged for 24 months in large oak botti casks. 13% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Somewhat translucent and slightly evolved blackish cherry red color with a subtly pomegranate hue. Fragrant, somewhat evolved and relatively Nebbiolo-ish nose with aromas of leather, sour cherries, some licorice, a little bit of tobacco, light savory woody tones and evolved hints of sweeter raisiny fruit and wizened dark berries. The wine is lively, sinewy and moderately full-bodied on the palate with flavors of black cherries, some sanguine notes of iron, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, light notes of old leather, a hint of savory wood spice and a touch of poach tobacco. The overall feel is enjoyably firm and structured, thanks to the rather high acidity and still moderately grippy tannins. The finish is lively, rather grippy and long with a suave, layered aftertaste of ripe dark berries, some wizened black cherries, a little bit of old leather, light notes of tobacco, a hint of fresh red fruit and a subtle, Nebbiolo-ish touch of tar.

A wonderful, pleasantly evolved yet still very fresh and vibrant Sangiovese. I was immediately guessing Nebbiolo because of the sour cherry tones, firm tannic backbone and nuances of tar, but while I got the Italian red part right, I was otherwise off quite a bit. However, I estimated the wine to be approximately 15 years old (guessing 2006 vintage), so I wasn't that far off age-wise! All in all, somewhat in the ballpark, but still way off. Nevertheless, this is a lovely wine that is in a lovely spot now, but at the same time showing great potential for future development. Can be drunk now, but most likely will continue to improve for many years - perhaps even decades - more. Very lovely, recommended. (2252 views)
Tasted by IJC on 5/9/2020: Outstanding and Delicious. Wow.

Absolutely in a prime drinking window: this ensemble is in peak form -in tune, in sync, and a thing of beauty. Decanted 45 minutes, right out of the bottle, a seductive, powerful nose - think burning embers (no smoke, no sense of heat, just the crackle of energy). In the mouth, a kaleidoscope of flavors - tart, lively, a touch of earth, a touch of fire, a touch of roasted spice. I have another bottle, too... whoopee!

Tasted by baroloboy55-2.0 on 3/13/2020 & rated 93 points: Excellent bottle of Montevertine Rosso in an ideal place. Will have to exercise discipline with my remaining 5 bottles of this vintage (even if my CT inventory lists over 15 cases from this producer of various bottlings and vintages, with emphasis on the Rosso).

The alluring, unique aromas are quite present out of the gate, sour cherry fruit, camphor/menthol, spice, and a chalk earthy note underpinning. The wine is quite rich yet exceptionally balanced on the palate and takes on weight with a little bit of air. The balance is terrific, medium acidity (consistent with this warm vintage). Seems to me that this bottle is near the peak of maturity (I'd say, in contrast that Felsina Rancia is not quite at peak and Scallette Carbonaione is teetering on the downslope when I think of recent 04s I've tasted.)

This was clearly one of those bottles that offers so much of what Manetti can deliver in bottles below the level of Pergole Torte, and sent a strong signal that the son possessed so many of his father's talents, and makes me so happy to be so deep in these wines. (1647 views)
Tasted by doctornoah on 12/2/2018 & rated 92 points: Lovely, perfumed cherry. Medium-light in weight and that's perfect for this non-Brunello kinda guy. Long finish and subtle. (1972 views)
Tasted by doctornoah on 5/2/2018 flawed bottle: Cloudy and a bit off. Heat damaged? (2250 views)
Tasted by chcook on 2/16/2018: brief note from memory. cork perfect. this was delicious and on the perfumed delicate side. mature and ready for duty. thanks mike! (2018 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 2/16/2018: Tasted blind. Very deep color. Smoky, fragrant, ripe. Medium weight, some wood, earthy, citric, strong fruit and acidity. Still young, not particularly striking. (2109 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 1/17/2018: This is just killer Sangiovese; the nose is mature now with lovely red fruit, anise, leather, tobacco, hints of earth and iron. The palate is delicious; still has lovely fruit, earth, spice, and hints of game with integrated tannins and still a nice fresh middle. Probably not getting better, but should be really enjoyable for at least another 5-10 years. (1868 views)
Tasted by DK Amateur on 3/18/2016: Magnum, decanted 1+ hour. Did not really show any signs of age. Dark cherry fruit, dust and earth in a high acidity and very fresh frame. Nice but a bit underwhelming. Perhaps it should be either younger or older, at least I think I prefer the younger vintages. (3001 views)
Tasted by LambertsCellar on 10/12/2015 & rated 92 points: Ethereal Chianti. Beautiful, floral, cherry, earth. Ruby color. Medium/full bodied palate. Lovely wine, particularly for the cost. (2866 views)
Tasted by IJC on 8/27/2015: Still going quite strong, there remains a lot of life in this vintage.

Rated 1 on a scale of -1 to 3. (2720 views)
Tasted by _Xenon on 4/21/2015 & rated 93 points: Heavily perfumed and intoxicating nose! This wine got better and better over the years. Sadly this was my last bottle. And it was the best. Complex, integrated and perfectly fitting the Spaghetti Puttanesca I enjoyed at home while watching Bayern against Port CL game.

Considering the brown edges I don't this this wine will evolve further. Drink until 2016. (3186 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 4/2/2015: Delicious. Powerful nose of black cherry, anise, rose petal, freshly turned earth, and cool minerality. The palate is lovely, elegant, but still has some tannin that kicks in. The red berry, floral, and anise notes are in full effect. The finish is good. Certainly seems to have structure and flavor to continue to evolve for several years. Definitely good now, I suspect will be better in another 2-3 years. (3118 views)
Tasted by vespa110 on 1/7/2015 & rated 92 points: Buono, tannino si è smussato, profuma di toscana e di sangiovese, con lo spiedo è stato polverizzato. (2294 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 11/15/2014: This is great wine. This vintage shows as there is plenty of tannin, some darker fruit, alongside red berry and lots of savory, meaty, smoky tones. There is also some forest floor and floral hints. This is the type of wine I could smell all night. The palate shows pretty robust tannins still, but they are integrating and with food and air meld well. The finish is a touch tannic currently. I think this has a good 6-10 years of continued development ahead. It drinks well now with aeration and food, but should continue to improve. (2052 views)
Tasted by kevinacohn on 10/30/2014: The second bottle I've had in the last three months. Black cherry, brown sugar, violets, fresh turned earth, and tobacco on the nose—perfumed, rich, alluring. Sadly, the palate doesn't live up to the nose: thin on the tip of the tongue, with acid popping out on the middle, and not in the most pleasant way. Somewhat drying on the finish. Not in the same league as the last bottle, which was excellent in every way. Maybe not the best bottle, maybe on a downward slope. Rated 0 on a scale of -1 to 3. (2191 views)
Tasted by Al Ehrhardt on 9/6/2014: Very similar to my last bottle a year and a half ago. In a sweet spot for drinking. Really enjoyed this. Awesome with grilled rack of lamb. (2034 views)
 Tasted by B & B on 6/24/2014 & rated 90 points: Best chianti ever (2279 views)
Tasted by Lype on 6/19/2014: To me very closed at this point but very promising, will be very good after some years of cellaring. (892 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 5/29/2014: This is absolutely fantastic. Much darker in color than the other Montevertine's I've tasted. The nose is almost reminiscent of a fine Gevrey burgundy with savory, meaty notes, underlying dark cherry, fresh turned earth, and some tobacco notes. Really actually hard to stop smelling. The palate is filled with dark cherry and other black fruit with plenty of tannin that is integrating well and is overall nicely balanced. More tannin in this than the other Montevertine's I've had, but integrating well. I think this has a couple of years of positive development still ahead and will drink well for another 5-7 years easily. Fantastic example of balanced Sangiovese. Can't recommend enough. (2017 views)
Tasted by IJC on 1/18/2014: Opened and decanted an hour before drinking. Definitely within its drinking window, tannins well integrated with fruit, though later in the evening, it reminded me that it still had plenty of reserve, and might improve with additional cellaring.
Very fine.

Sangiovese Blend

Sangiovese blend is used in CellarTracker for Italian wines to represent wines predominantly made of Sangiovese and blended with traditional Italian grapes. It is different than SuperTuscan which is a blend of Sangiovese with non-traditional (eg Bordeaux) varieties, often in closer to equal portions. For example, Chianti is at least 80% Sangiovese and will always be listed Sangiovese blend.
