Tasted by BernieMSY on 5/1/2024 & rated 96 points: Decanted for two hours prior to tasting.

Medium Ruby color; black cherry nose.

Wonderful wine!

Delicious black cherry and plum fruit up front, with a healthy dose of “Tuscan dust” and a touch of garrigue-like lavender. A rich and complex, umami-laden mid-palate, with leather and tobacco tones. This one has plenty of tannic structure, indicating that it’s going to hang in there for the long-haul, but it is drinking beautifully right now. It’s hard to resist! (246 views)
Tasted by tedcholl on 4/27/2024 & rated 92 points: 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiola, 5% Colorino. Drinks like a Chianti Classico on steroids! Intense fruit flavors. cherry, raspberry, leather, tobacco, earthy notes, balsamic. (234 views)
Tasted by Tudz Drkl on 2/17/2024: Sangiovese Study at Planque (Planque London UK): Concentrated, earthy, smokey and herbal on the nose with red cherry and strawberry fruits noted lightly by herbs and wild grasses. The palate is round and chalky in texture with red and light red fruits all savory and slightly roasted. Great spicy length. Delicious. (891 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 1/12/2024 & rated 91 points: The prior note from kohada is spot on. Tight initially, becomes more enjoyable with air. Has an earthy, dusty quality to it and a complex finish. Nice pair with marinara sauce and pasta. (1239 views)
Tasted by kohada on 1/11/2024: Needs air at this time. Dried cranberry/cherry aspect, trail-mix-y quality to it, firm tannin and acid without being overwhelming in either aspect, maintaining a sort of smooth, elegant quality despite its firmness.

Showed much better an hour after opening, as the tannin relaxes and the fruit becomes more giving. Delicious, well made wine but its best days are ahead. (1226 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 1/7/2024 & rated 93 points: Decanted for 1 hour and paired with grilled NY strips.

Dark red color. Sweet cherry, red licorice, rosemary and ripe cherry on nose. On palate, medium body, medium acidity, medium tannins and very long finish. Very enjoyable. 93+/- (1238 views)
Tasted by redwhiteandrich on 11/14/2023 & rated 91 points: Day 1: chewy leather and dusty tomato's/cherries.

Day 2: tannins resolve a bit. (1457 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 11/10/2023 & rated 92 points: Really nice. Showing well with classic Sangiovese notes. Dusty tannins. Showing a bit of complexity. Love this producer. (1186 views)
Tasted by Peter Spijker on 8/13/2023 & rated 92 points: No note made. (1280 views)
Tasted by BernieMSY on 8/13/2023 & rated 95 points: Decanted for one hour prior to tasting.
Dark burgundy/garnet color; roast meat and black fruit nose.
Rich, broad and nuanced. Classic Tuscan dust; black cherry, leather and lots of underlying umami. This one is showing much better than the previous bottle. Still, I think it’s worth holding for few more years. Quite nice right now, however. (1404 views)
Tasted by B Paul on 7/9/2023: I did not decant, but a short one wouldn’t hurt a thing here. Stony cherry notes. Good structure and balance suggest it will age well, at least over the medium term. Really lovely. (1476 views)
Tasted by BernieMSY on 4/11/2023 & rated 93 points: Decanted for two hours before consuming.
Dark purple color. Delicious, fruit forward and concentrated. Lots of tannins. Long life ahead. Needs more time. (1627 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 9/22/2022 & rated 89 points: This has an appealing smoky black cherry and plum nose with tar and spice. Lighter bodied palate in this vintage is fresh and tangy though missing some punch in the finish. Solid. Peaking early and now. (2208 views)
Tasted by Gunakadeit on 8/27/2022 & rated 91 points: A lot of power and potential, but we aren’t in the drinking window. (1770 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 5/22/2022: Good (2054 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 5/3/2022: First sample of this vintage; it is excellent, but I fear probably close to shutting down; the nose has mint and fennel with ripe cherry and currant, a bit of red plum, just a hint of tobacco and damp earth; the palate is dense and packed, plenty of structure and definitely on the full throttle side for Montevertine. That said the balance is there and I think this will age gracefully. The structure seemed about ready to envelope the fruit though so I'd either try one soon or wait a few years. (2122 views)
Tasted by grafstrb on 4/14/2022 & rated 93 points: -- decanted approx. 45 min. before initial taste --
-- tasted non-blind over 2 to 3 hours --

NOSE: high-toned aromatics with dark cherry and cherry pit leading the way, supported by notes of potting soil and freshly crushed green weeds. After having been open for a couple of hours, a complex melange of saffron/oud/rose/motor oil emerged. Complex, beguiling, and reserved.

BODY: violet-garnet color of medium-deep to deep depth; no sediment; medium-light to medium bodied.

TASTE: quite tannic/drying; cherry pit; hint of leather (not bretty); savory; Ajwain seed; medium to medium+ acidity; alc. not noticeable (labelled at 13.5%); red currant; paired well with cheesy risotto, but paired poorly with steak; drinks light/easy --- so, perhaps tight/closed, or moving in that direction, right now; very moreish, but also incomplete --- wait at least 5 more years. Excellent.

Tasted by melzar on 8/30/2021 & rated 92 points: Ditto previous notes. Very good but overpriced and not as good as the "16. (2511 views)
Tasted by MAXIMUM SATISFACTION on 6/3/2021 & rated 93 points: Opened in the bottle several hours and decanted a couple more. This was very nice but needs time and is dominated by forest/pine notes. Dusty cherry comes through but the acid sears over it. Drink the Pian del Ciampolo now and hold these several years. (2820 views)
Tasted by Costes76 on 3/27/2021 & rated 93 points: Medium ruby color. Pronounced and elegant nose of cherries, redcurrant and forest aromatics. Dry, full acidity, tight tannins, palate follows through. Medium body. Good balance. Medium finish. Great QPR, pity out of stock. (2457 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 3/3/2021: Quite delicious at first pour. Great pure, sappy sangiovese fruit. It's a darker hue than expected and ripe but not imbalanced or heavy. Tightens up considerably in glass after an hour. Drink now or wait 3-4 years. (2647 views)
Tasted by atbarbar on 2/8/2021 & rated 93 points: Deep ruby. Initially muted but shows immediately compressed power. Some almond, then some green, like green tea and some residual wood. As it opens up the fruit shows up, above all morello cherry and plum. As it continues to open up flowers, lily. Balsamic penetrating acidity, finally underwood and spice box. General impression of marine. Fantastic palate with thick crunchy ripe plum with its fresh acidity that supports the fruit. The acidity is citrusy and confers quite a bit of length. Blind, almost impossible to distinguish from a Barbaresco above all if it does not open up fully. The only hint: that impression of clorine/sea water as soon as it gets on the palate. Traces of roasted meat in the aftertaste. Preservation of the purity of the fruit is admirable here, only as I find in other few top producers like Busso.

The wine can be consumed now, after appropriate aeration but there is some slight residual wood that needs to be integrated. Better in a year from now and then at least for the next 10 years. Galloni pushes it to 2042, 25 years seems a long way but admittedly I have very little experience with this wine, so maybe. The thing is: don't you want to savor this wonderful fresh fruit before the wine shuts down for its second life? Then buy a case, drink a couple and forget the rest for 10 years...

I think that 2017 is a fantastic vintage, strong very ripe (but not overripe) fruit but also citrus acidity that supports it, I found the same in some top Barbarescos (see my note on Busso San Stunet). I have not tried the 2016 yet, but yes as suggested by DREAM I assume the 2017 will be ready earlier than the 2016 (it is the case for Barbaresco). (2317 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 12/25/2020: Typically delicious. (2151 views)
Tasted by melzar on 11/23/2020 & rated 92 points: Very good Sangiovase, but perhaps not worth the price. Initial vegetal notes on the nose blow off quickly. Well balanced palate shows us a wine that begs for one more sip. Drinking well now, but will hold for many years. (1981 views)

Sangiovese Blend

Sangiovese blend is used in CellarTracker for Italian wines to represent wines predominantly made of Sangiovese and blended with traditional Italian grapes. It is different than SuperTuscan which is a blend of Sangiovese with non-traditional (eg Bordeaux) varieties, often in closer to equal portions. For example, Chianti is at least 80% Sangiovese and will always be listed Sangiovese blend.
