Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.7 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 149 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by rmcnees on 8/3/2022 & rated 92 points: At thirteen years, this is drinking very nicely now, probably at the apex of its drinking profile, and not likely to improve any further with aging.

With dark inky color, this exhibited medium-full bodied, nicely complex but nicely balanced and well integrated bright vibrant forward blackberry and black currant fruits with notes of cassis, cedar, mocha and hints of sweet oak with smooth soft tannins on the lingering finish.

Tasted by Parnelli on 12/18/2021 & rated 90 points: Yeah, on it's last legs and shoulda had it sooner, but it is what it is ... still a very solid cab, but it definitely has lost a lot of the fruit, but still the balance is there. Still enjoyed it, but I remember what it was in it's prime. (807 views)
Tasted by TheScottieV on 8/22/2020 & rated 94 points: Quite enjoyable. A medium bodied Bordeaux Blend that blew away it’s price point. Over a decade later, still elegant and powerful, and this should retain its structure for another 5 years minimum. Light cinnamon and cherry cola nose. Firm tannin structure supports berries, spice, and sweet cherry. Nice, long tart cherry finish. 94 (1359 views)
Tasted by Parnelli on 11/8/2019 & rated 91 points: Bottle 11 of the 12 and still tasting great after 10 years! Great balance of fruit, tannis and acidity. See other notes for nose and palate info. If you have any bottles left, it's time to enjoy! (1646 views)
Tasted by Parnelli on 7/5/2019 & rated 92 points: This wine is at a super sweet spot right now! Great balance of dark fruit, acidity and tannins. Wonderful! (1755 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 2/25/2019 & rated 91 points: Really nice at age 10. Currant, pepper and light spice. Better balance, finish and completeness than a previous bottle a few years back. (1614 views)
Tasted by WAWINEFAN on 10/30/2018 & rated 90 points: Decent. Nothing notable but not bad either (1803 views)
Tasted by WineJunkieWest on 6/16/2018 & rated 92 points: I brought this wine to a dinner served second in the line up. It was perfectly matched with the main which consisted of grilled halibut with squash and pistachio mint salsa and roasted herbed root vegetables with a balsamic glaze. Decanted for an hour. The nose and palate had rich dark cherries, blackberries, spice and cedar. Soft, smooth tannins mid-palate with a medium finish. A lovely elegant wine that maybe losing some of it's previous boldness, but still drinking very nicely right now. Drink up! (1774 views)
Tasted by Lockareff on 4/2/2018 & rated 92 points: Well balanced, nice structure, smooth finish. Fruit fading a bit but still drinking very nicely. I suspect my bottle was cellared a bit better than some of the previous comments. (1630 views)
Tasted by SheddVA on 5/20/2017 & rated 86 points: Think we may have let this bottle go a year or so too long. Fruit was fading, as was the finish. It didn't have the pop of other Flora Springs Bordeaux varietal reds. (2299 views)
Tasted by Parnelli on 8/6/2016 & rated 88 points: Decanted about 30 minutes prior to drinking and it could have used a lot more time. Poured a beautiful dark dark ruby red. Dark fruit on the nose and palate. Nice integration of fruit, wood (vanilla) and acidity. Tannins are quite evident. Nice balance, just not as good as our last bottle a year ago. (3088 views)
Tasted by Pgreenbe702 on 8/6/2016 & rated 85 points: Stunning Rutherford gold. Lots of fruit and new world flavors. Screams Napa Cab. (2820 views)
Tasted by Pgraziano on 3/28/2016: Big with black fruits
Too big for my taste but good representation of Napa meritage (3224 views)
Tasted by Trent Steele on 9/26/2015: Sharp nose, alcohol, cherries. Heartburn. Ok not great. (3457 views)
Tasted by East of Napa on 7/25/2015 & rated 91 points: Drank at my 60th birthday surprise party! What fun! (2992 views)
Tasted by Parnelli on 7/11/2015 & rated 93 points: Oh may, this is tasting fantastic! Decanted for about 45 minutes at our favorite restaurant and then sampled ... WOW! Rich dark fruit on the nose and palate with beautiful integration of tannins and acidity ... think smooooooooooooooooooth. So enjoyable!! (2076 views)
Tasted by RKBergman on 6/28/2015 & rated 92 points: Going from memory on this one since were having too much fun and weren't diligent with the note taking. We drank this wine after drinking a exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Everyone commented on how well this is balanced in all segments, eyes, nose, palate and finish. There were plenty of comments on the value of this wine and how good it really was when compared to more expensive wines. We will definitely keep this wine in our cellar and not afraid to pull it out for some serious wine drinkers. (2205 views)
Tasted by WineAggregate on 5/24/2015 & rated 87 points: Oak, wintergreen, vanilla on the nose, then on the palate a bit sweet, with licorice and plenty of rough tannin, inky. A bit extreme for me, since I've gravitated more to pinot noir. This isn't like the Trilogy from the 1980s I used to drink. (2008 views)
Tasted by Parnelli on 5/24/2015 & rated 91 points: Poured a beautiful dark dark ruby red. Double decanted for over 2 hours. A little tight to begin with, but continued to open up as time went by. Lots of dark fruit on the nose and palate, but not a 'bomb'. Wonderful integration of fruit, wood (vanilla) and acidity. Tannins are quite evident, but very pleasant. Great balance now, but I'm thinking it'll get even better. (1432 views)
Tasted by Whinojb on 12/15/2014 & rated 90 points: Great nose of dark fruit, vanilla, earth and leather. Good mouth feel and well integrated tannins. Finish was short. (2274 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 11/22/2014 & rated 89 points: Subtle pepper and earth notes on the nose. Smooth palate with currant and pepper with a finish too short for what else was going on. (2157 views)
Tasted by RKBergman on 8/2/2014 & rated 92 points: Going from memory on this one since were having too much fun and weren't diligent with the note taking. We drank this wine after drinking a exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Everyone commented on how well this is balanced in all segments, eyes, nose, palate and finish. There were plenty of comments on what you get for the price. Looking forward to trying again after letting rest in the bottle for a period of time and will take better notes. (2804 views)
 Tasted by brouigu1 on 6/14/2014 & rated 91 points: Still a solid 91 points.

The 2009 is maturing well and the fruits are still in the front but the integration with the woods is fantastic. Decant this wine to appreciate the nose of black fruits, spice, leather with a herbal finish.

Beautiful color, balanced acids and nice mouth feel helps to make this a peak drinking right now and for several years to come. (2870 views)
Tasted by ichiballs on 5/13/2014 & rated 88 points: A little tight. Needed an hr to open up. Decent fruit, smooth tannins, a little acidic. (3146 views)
Tasted by folsomarndt on 4/20/2014 & rated 91 points: Enjoyable Bordeaux blend. Good balance, with mid length finish. (2466 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
