| Community Tasting Notes (average 89.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 22 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by paul195 on 4/9/2024 & rated 90 points: Fresh fruit nose to start, an hour in the decanter and this was ready to go. Decent darker fruit, resolved tannins, reasonably balanced, medium finish. Decent bottle but in the end this was a little simple. (72 views) | | Tasted by Woodbridge Brad on 1/16/2021 & rated 90 points: Ullage 3/4", clean cork but an AhSo was needed. 13% alcohol lots of sun dried tomato and bell pepper notes. All in all a quite nice wine but those flavors are not favored anymore in NV Cabernet. This was from a growers cellar and we tasted with other winemakers. This was pushing the aging window, quite nice but losing depth. I got a little green pepper, faint dusty plum, earthy notes, pencil shavings, very mature, resolved but still very present tannin (3388 views) | | Tasted by odds on 10/8/2016 & rated 94 points: Second bottle of this one in six months.... This time (At home) more decanting time was given which was rewarding. So rewarding we finished the bottle in less than two hours :-) I remain in agreement with the previous notes (some reach the six year line now) ) re: eucalyptus and mint were noted. More spice and earthy notes than I recalled in April. Color wise, more of the brown/brick signs. Fruit wise, I would say we noticed a lot of berries on palate, less of currant compared with the tasting in April. Similar to April, more notable the earthy notes (cedar, pencil). The finish was certainly longer this time. Maybe much longer. Great much to the steak and side dishes. Very enjoyable. This time, certainly earned a ~94 or even abit above
Summary: we drank it in the same year (2016) because we were concerned wrt mixed reviews on aging. Our final opinion is--good storage conditions stored wines would last longer. (4229 views) | | Tasted by jeginmt on 6/1/2016 & rated 94 points: A wonderful elegant older cab, dark red, medium bodied, nice currant flavors with earthiness, very well balanced. Improved considerably two hours after opening. I have a few Mondavis from the eighties and they don't disappoint. (4376 views) | | Tasted by odds on 4/2/2016 & rated 93 points: A decision was to enjoy a nice, older cab with no good reason but the weekend (okay, and a nice meal). It delivered. From PnP it had good floral nose, but more earthy. imho, typical for a wine in that age and good storage conditions. Decanted for 30 minutes or so and taken to the restaurant, then just stayed in the open bottle. I agree with previous notes (from almost five years ago!) that the eucalyptus and mint were noted. On teh color- red brick, with nice brown/brick signs. Still lots of fruit on the palate (currant, berries?) though more dominantly the earthy notes (cedar, pencil, a bit tabacco and chocolate?). Medium finish that got somewhat longer over the evening. I would say after an hour or so it got to the ideal length/balance point. By the age of this bottle, variations of storage conditions and bottles may occur. We were lucky and got a very good bottle. Given the variation of notes I see on CT, we may drink the other bottle we have in the foresee future.
~93 and we left a nice taste for the house to enjoy. Caring is sharing. (4533 views) | | Tasted by nywine68 on 11/4/2015: As always, a beautiful wine. I love this vintage. Classic mature cab (1162 views) | | Tasted by flajoe on 2/15/2011 & rated 75 points: past its prime but still drinkable (7326 views) | | Tasted by tooch on 12/22/2010 & rated 93 points: 2nd Annual Gem Dinner (Ardeo - Washington, DC): Classic aged California cabernet nose of mint, menthol, and eucalyptus. Add to that a very nice earthy red-fruit and floral backbone and you have just a wonderful nose. Palate was firm with iron and red-fruit. Another shining example of aged elegance out of Napa. Palate of cherry, some leather, tomato, and a little mint. Seemed simple compaired the other wines in the flight. 88-89 (6222 views) | | Tasted by Faryan on 12/22/2010 & rated 90 points: Order out of Chaos (Ardeo, Washington DC): A proud example of aged Napa Valley Cab. very refined but still quintessentially Napa. Menthol, sweet cherry tobacco and cassis. Finishes smooth with some suppleness. Great stuff. (7252 views) | | Tasted by DecoEd on 10/4/2010 & rated 92 points: Intersting hints of Green Pepper... (5107 views) | | Tasted by JoeDwine on 5/2/2009 & rated 93 points: Hitting on all levels. Great showing (328 views) | | Tasted by NorCal2SoAfrica on 2/20/2005: Drank a bottle last night. It was excellent: smooth, no brown tinge, modest sedimentation. Wish I had more. (4440 views) | | Tasted by FoodMuse on 4/25/2001 & rated 95 points: Intense notes of blackberry, cassis, cherry, and raspberry. Well structured with tannins that had softened to whisper. Stunning! (3181 views) | | Tasted by bestdamncab on 9/2/1991 & rated 85 points: MONDAVI TASTING (Walnut Creek, Ca.): Nice, fruity, great body, hint of mint on the nose, easy drinking, some bottle bouquet, medium/long finish. (115 views) | | Tasted by bestdamncab on 3/16/1991 & rated 85 points: 8 Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignons Tasted at the Mondavi Reserve Room (Robert Mondavi Winery Reserve Tasting Room): Very rich, open, fruity nose and mouthfeel, simple, one dimensional, trifle over balanced toward acid, slightly harsh tannins. (107 views) | | Tasted by bestdamncab on 2/23/1991 & rated 85 points: Mostly 1987 Cabernet Sauvignons (Hi-Time Wine Cellars, Costa Mesa, Ca.): Off nose, hot fruit, not unpleasant nose, chalky and dusty muted fruit on the nose and mouth, light/medium sweet fruit in the mouth, taste of dust and dirt on the finish, not bad, not good, too much acid on the finish. Producer websiteCabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.
Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet SauvignonUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Napa Valley Napa Valley Wineries and Wine (Napa Valley Vintners)Napa ValleySt. Helena |
