Introduction

An intro tasting to Spain's classic wine regions of Navarra/Rioja, Ribera-del-Duero & priorat. Mostly young wines of medium-entry level.

Flight 1 - reception wine (1 Note)

nothing to do with the tasting itself

Flight 2 - Navarra/Rioja intro (2 Notes)

The first Riscal was a bit corky. Second was better.

Flight 3 - New & Old Rioja (3 Notes)

  • 2006 Artadi Viñas de Gain 89 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja

Dar red color; modern wine aroma, fruity, tannic, chewy, quite full-bodied.

  • 1998 Faustino Rioja I Gran Reserva 86 Points

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

Red-brown color; pleasant light secondary aroma, light leather & nutmeg, feeling as if high alcohol; medium-bodied, old-world / old-riojan style, but not of a great vintage nor a great wine.

  • 1964 Faustino Rioja I Gran Reserva 92 Points

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

light red tends to brown; great secondary & tertiary aromas, live & kicking in a surprisingly way; tannic, elegant, enjoyable & lively taste for a short while after opening. Can be further aged for 10-15 years, but should be consumed short after bottle opening.

Flight 4 - medium-entry level into Ribera (3 Notes)

Flight 5 - a bit of Priorat (2 Notes)

Closing

An enjoyable evening. The 1964 Faustino-I was a great surprise. That's all. 2005 & 2006 vintages in Rioja & Ribera are not great ones.
