Introduction

Great offline at the Edina Country Club. No corked bottles again and great discussions as always. Thanks John for hosting and food was great!

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 1996 Perrier-Jouët Champagne Cuvée Fleur de Champagne 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Very nice Champagne and featured candied lemon, almonds, minerals, chalk and orange peel. Medium to long finish and the wine got better as it got closer to room temperature.

  • 2002 Nicolas Potel Clos de la Roche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Light color. Really opened up over the night with strawberries, cranberry, minerals, mushrooms and more. Good acidity and medium finish. Very nice wine.

  • 1970 Château Beychevelle 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Still some life left but should have been consumed 20 years ago. Tar, carmel, spices and a touch of cherry. Color was still there.

  • 1996 Château Léoville Barton 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Nice wine with plenty of life left. Scorched earth, floral, coffee and gravel with a hint of raspberries. Good acidity and I would love to try this again in 5 years.

  • 2001 Château Montrose 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Top five wine of the vintage? Wonderful wine and drinking well right now with cherry, gravel, spices and floral notes. Good acid profile and still medium tannins. Medium and concentrated on the finish and super balanced wine.

  • 2000 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 87 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia

Interesting wine with herbs, mushrooms, burnt rubber and a green streak. At first glance I thought the wine was slightly corked but not the case. I did not get any fruit out of the wine and it was hard to get past the green elements of the wine.

  • 1997 Antinori Tignanello 94 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Medium purple. Floral, blackberries, crushed rock, mushrooms and a little funk on the nose. The funk blew off and this complex wine showed its stuff. Dried fruits were evident on the palate and finish and it had a medium to long finish.

  • 1998 Massolino Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Tar, spice, floral and carmel. Some licorice on the palate. Decanted 5 plus hours but this wine needs to show its stuff on day 3 or cellar for five more years.

  • 1999 Marcarini Barolo Brunate 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Floral, spice, raspberries and tar. Sweet tannins and smooth wine. Medium finish.

  • 2003 Château Lynch-Bages 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Pencil lead, dark cherry, tobacco, coffee and plum. Dark wine and concentrated. Great finish and showing well now but advise to cellar five plus years. Should improve a few points.

  • 2004 Château Pontet-Canet 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Dark! Blind I would never guess Bordeaux and had an in your face nose of crushed rock, violets, spices and cassis. Rich wine with cherry, violets, spices and chocolate dominating the palate and finish. Long finish and tannic. Should have 20 plus years left.
