Flight 1 - Starter (1 Note)

  • NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Les Carelles

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

upon pop & pour, I found the nose a bit closed, even in a burgundy glass, but did identify bright apple and a roasted nut aroma.
the palate was very full, mouthcoating, even, with a lightly oxidized bent. In all, superbly balanced fruit and acid + uber-long finish = pretty incredible stuff. My first Selosse, and my introduction to the magic of Anselme. In other circumstances, I could have nursed this glass all night.

Flight 2 - Right Bank Bordeaux (4 Notes)

  • 1989 Château Angélus

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    nose: charcoal, lightly green notes
palate: less dense than the Conseillantes I tasted prior to it, this was still a fantastic wine. I'm afraid my note-taking here was lacking...

  • 1989 Château La Conseillante

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

nose: herbal, minty, even hints of mint chocolate on occasion
palate: the texture was flawless, with a licorice tendency that danced on the tongue. So balanced and so elegant, it was just a hair less divine than the 1990 tasted alongside.

  • 1995 Château Angélus

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

more intensity in the 1995 when compared to the 1990 tasted alongside. This opened up in the glass and yielded a bold, intriguing palate.. THe mouthfeel was supple, and the fruit was nuanced beneath the rocky tannin. I would expect good things to come of further cellaring

  • 1990 Château La Conseillante 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

My favorite of the flight, and my favorite bordeaux to date. It appeared more oak-infused and more intense than the 1989, though the palate retained some green edges reminiscent of the earlier vintage. I tasted bacon and perfectly ripened black fruits, overlaid with cardamom toast, as the palate morphed continuously over the tongue. It's hard to imagine a more complete or perfect wine.
