disg 19 Jan 2021 nose - burnt sugar, liqueresque mouth - rich and aged, hints of whisky but nevermind that as the riproaring acidity is here to smash your face. unique in its ability to simultaneously be advanced and fresh. How does he do that??

Feb 2016 disgorgement. Stellar. Excellent depth. Lovey seam of acidity to balance the weight. Grows more complex in the glass over 30/40 minutes. To my taste these are at peak balance between fruit, age, and acidity.

Beau cadeau reçu d'un bon fournisseur, merci Didier! Super vineux et bien vif. Des notes de brioches, de salin, de citrons et de coing. Long et bien vivifiant, j'ai adoré!

Nose: banoffee, fig, balsamic, dark chocolate, ripe pear, nuts, grappa, chestnut Notes: disgorged in 2018. The clean and distinctive minerality coupled with the signature oxidative nose simply shows how precise this Domaine can be when presenting their wines. A really bone dry palate followed by this amount of intensity without a full body is somewhat quite contradictory and amazing at the same time, this wine is far from big or round and if anything it's quite lean. Although this may not be my favorite Selosse cuvee but I surely am able to appreciate this style and love every single sip of it. A couple more years will make this even better. Drink: 2027+ Rating: 91

(Disgorged 1/19)- Always my favorite of the Lieux-Dits and without question one of the very best Blanc de Blancs Champagnes on the planet, it’s stunning tonight, rich, powerful and intense with crazy depth to its layers, unfurling in a Burgundy glass to reveal its complex core of rich orchard fruit, roasted nuts, gun smoke, old rum barrels and candied white flowers, all with seamless integration and balance. The palate is generous and detailed, with racy acids, waves of saline laced chalky Le Mesnil minerals and a finish that just keeps going. For me, the BdB benchmark.

Bourgogne visit 29/10-1/11-2023: Outstanding. For some reason no disgorgement date indicated on the bottle (the field was empty). Typical oxidative style from Selosse which I love so much when it works. You never quite know with Selosse, but this bottle was perfect. Notes of bread dough, lemon, overripe apple, toffee, nutty. High acidity, delicate mousse and long finish. Wow 96+

purchased at Au Fils du Zinc in Chablis; dark golden in color with a classic Selosse oxidative nose; honeyed floral notes, bruised apple, some peach blossom, a bit of roasted almond; the nose is very complex and keeps you coming back to the glass; feels cerebral to me, but in a good way; the palate is somewhat cerebral also, but is also incredibly pleasurable; such a silky feel with very tiny bubbles; rich and vinous with a lovely concentration of honeyed apricot and red apple; the finish is like cashmere and leaves a lingering note of almond and honey. I was unable to find a disgorgement on this bottle so no idea when its from. It was an incredible bottle though.

Trait - d - Union Pricate dinner, by Pure Spirits (Linovatis Bistro): Based on 2015 vintage High intensity, highly expressive, very fresh in the same time, a touch salty, palate very expressive again, tight, high acidity, chalky, med to full body, some sweet buttery notes, honey notes very peculiar, precise, long finish Outstanding quality
Trait - d - Union tasting, by Pure Spirits (Warehouse assemblage): The wines shows a bit deeper color, depth, complexity, layered, nutty, ripe citrus and stone fruit, mango/tropical fruit, depth, grapefruit, quince In the palate, the wine shows high intensity, more oxidative notes, citrus, lime, nectarine, tight, high carbonation, more linear than expected, utterly dry, aggressive, unforgiving, med body and finish

Another March 2017 disgorgement and far better than the cork affected bottle we had a couple of nights ago. Expressive nose of buttered toast, candied peel, white peach and spice. Great shape in the mouth. Quite vinous and super chalky. Great cut and drive.

Wow. Powerful ripe nose, with yeasty nutty round. Round and rich up front, great Med+ acid, peach and pear and apple and lemon. Oxidative but light touch. Fucking incredible. If this was sub-$250 I’d buy heaps of it.

An Amazing Rousseau-based Burgundy Dinner with the Seattle Vinous Group (Seattle): February, 2015 disgorgement. Full yellow color, transient fine bead. Lactic, brioche-filled nose with a faint oxidative edge. Full bodied, creamy, and long with a great combination of bitter citrus and stone. A Grand Cru white Burgundy disguised as Champagne.

2017 disgorgement, likely 2010 base. Out of burgundy glasses paired with oysters and turbot. Incredible richness paired better with the fish. If you like the richer, oxidative style of bdb this is about as good as it gets, honey blossom, honey, autolytic/toast notes (but not bruised apple which I often get from Selosse) with a long finish and wonderfully balanced texture with air.

(Disgorged 2/15)- Always and forever my number 1 Lieux-Dits and without question one of the very best Blanc de Blancs Champagnes on the planet, tonight it is extra special with its coveted 2008 base and 2015 disgorgement. Always with imposing power, drive and crazy depth to its layers, it unfurls in a Burgundy glass to reveal its complex core of rich orchard fruit, roasted nuts, gun smoke, toasty oak and candied white flowers, all with seamless integration and balance. The palate is generous and detailed, with ripping citrusy acids, waves of saline laced chalky Le Mesnil minerals and a finish that just keeps going. For me, a BdB benchmark.

RP.04 kind of amazing in its way - really idiosyncratic and while not loud it’s so broad, detailed, and unique. The hand reaches for the glass as soon as it’s put down. Apple, peach, lily, delicate honey, raw almond, a little buttered popcorn / brioche, only ever so slightly oxidative. Expansive, soft palate, lingering on the finish with a little apricot. I really admire this

January '21 disgorgement. Some toastiness and savoury earthiness to the aroma. It has intense peach fruit along with preserved lemon notes. It is full and rich, with great chalky build. It expands through the palate and is so long, vinous and chewy.

12 April 2013 disgorgement. I serve these in Zalto Burg glasses, they are so rich yet electric and oxidative. A hint of Uber dry almond milk finish. Paradoxical. I do think Selosse is like Mermait and once in a while I crave it but I confess I couldn’t drink it every day. When I crave it it just hits the spot...

Domaine Romanee Conti Lunch (Phoenix, AZ USA): Fabulous is the first word that comes to mind yet again, rich, dense, huge finish. This is in an oxidative style, moreso than the last bottle tasted. But that didn't mar the experience at all, it was impossible to put the glass down. Often with our group there's Champagne leftover, but not today - people were clamoring for more, we could easily have drained a magnum. This is like drinking a great aged Leflaive, with bubbles. Disgorged in 2006.

Selosse (Oceanic, Pompano Beach, Florida): The lightest and most delicate of the lieux-dits, the Carelles displaces controlled oxidation in a medium bodied format. It makes sense since it’s composed of 100% Chardonnay. Some pear and apple. Not as complex as some of the others but a fine champagne of character nevertheless.

January 2021 disgorgement. Some nuttiness and baked apple on first inspection. There's a core of dense and sappy orchard fruit. It is rich and layered with flavour, with some brown spices. The finish has bitter citrus rind and is so long with chalky mineral action.

A small gathering - 02 Lignier MSD VV, 82 and 86 Mouton, 96 Giacosa Asili (Undisclosed location in McLean, VA): Beautifully mature complex nose displaying succulent dry yellow fruit, baked apple, apple cider, a hint of sherry, brioche, marzipan, cinnamon, lanoline and limestone. Perfectly integrated palate, finely layered slightly dry yellow fruit, fine medium generous mousse, good precision and detail, bright acidity, strong limestone mineral, ad a long dry yellow fruit driven finish with marzipan and limestone at the end. This is oxidative without losing freshness. Excellent showing.

Jacques Selosse horisontal tasting of 9 cuvees (Krüff): All wines were presented by Guillaume Selosse. For me the best cuvee this afternoon was 2007 Millesime, extra Brut, 94+. An unexpected no. 2 was Les Chantereines with 93+. Usually my favourite from Selosse is Les Carelles which this time ended with 92, the same as Chemin de Chalon. All these Top Four cuvees are BdB.
This wine: Delicate aromas, overripe apple and apricot and grapefruit. According to Guillaume 1,5 g sugar. Maybe very slightly corked. Usually - but not this time - my favourite cuvee! Interesting enough I found out that it is in general also Guillaume's own favorite.

The attack on the palate is still quite lively, but the full body comes to moderate the liveliness of the start. Again it is the extremely chalky feeling that emerges from it. It's pure but deep, lively without being sharp. Very nice balance, the whole is already unraveling very well. The finish is very long, intense.
Excellent champagne, enormous potential.

Gathering with Burgundy Lovers: Disgorged 10-Apr-2013. Some autolysis notes with bruise apple, iron, yellow flowers and roasted nut. Another Wine Slog Across France; 11/2/2019-11/13/2019 (Paris, Alsace, Burgundy, Encore Paris): January, 2019 disgorgement. Dull yellow, fine, persistent frothiness. Powerful massive wine. You can't even call it champagne as it is more of a wine than bubbly. Served after spending 2+ hours in decanter to open up its aromas. It further developed in my glass for the next 90 minutes showing one layer after another. Full of everything. Selosse style is on the extreme of oxidation scale and might not be appreciated for some winelovers.
But for me it is one of the most complex champagnes with enormous breadth and depth of aromas and flavours. It just blows your mind away.
One could argue if the terroir is actually present or that is just winemaking style. I assure you, once you taste different Lieux-dits you will see how different they are.
Terroir of Le Mesnil sur Oger. That is one of Lieux-dits collection of Mr. Anselme Selosse. 100% Chardonnay fermented and aged in oak barrels. Mini-solera of 8 consecutive vintages. Disgorged in July, 2018.
Det. 24.02.2015 vintage 2003-2008. Drunk from Zalto Universal, colour golden yellow, nose apples, litchi, baked lemon, taste big with long aftertaste, some minerals and fresh acid attack. Amazing Champagne after this other Champagnes are just bubblewater!1

Jacques Selosse - semi blind horisontal and vertical tasting (14 wines) (Nordsjaelland): BdB. Disgorged 3/2013. Without doubt the best wine of the evening. In the Selosse tastings I have participated, Les Carelles has been my favourite each and every time - tasted blind or not blind. Deep gold colour. Med intensity. Aromas of apple, vanilla, toast, bread dough and a hint of toffee. Happy to see that the continued oxidation in the glass takes time here. Selosse's wines are now and then (pretty often) developing even more oxidative notes much too fast within minutes in the glass. That's not the case here. I love it. 95+

Darker lightly burnished yellow-gold; nose of fresh yellow apples, mirabelles, little fresh apricots, touch yeasty bread, wheat bread; Creamy fine entry, fine foamy bubbles, quite sappy with good concentration and flesh; Zippy lively acidity, mouth watering, but still balanced. No real oxidation in this, but still is particular with a natural, apply feel, but not a super clean fresh wine either. Strikes a good balance. At Les Avisee, the Selosse hotel/restaurant. $247 on the wine list.
-With the foie gras: creamy mouthfeel mimics the foie, while the wine picks up perfectly on the little sour mirabelle plums.
-With the Sea Bass: a certain saline aspect did really well with the fish
-With the veal: The wine mimicked a little tart apple to go with the veal; the caramelized cooked meat also paired well with the caramel impressions in the wine and worked very well.
(disgorged Feb 2018) Probably my wine of the night and we recently had this at our mini Le Mesnil semi-blind tasting - much more obviously oxidative, powerful, yellow and white fruits, gravel, rocks, smoke. Sometimes I feel the Blanc de Blancs are better able to offer contrasting elements to the style that make the wines so interesting.

This bottle of Selosse Les Carelles was unusually blunt and doesn’t have the usual refined creamy minerals of Les Carelles. Strange as Tasted blind - Oxidative style. Ripe orchard fruits, blunt nose of ripe red berries which I mistaken for Pinot Noir. Reminds me of Jacques Selosse single vineyard but couldn’t quite pinpoint which cuvee it is. 2013 disgorgement? Selosse Pinot Noir? Sous le Mont? (93/100)

Jacques Selosse - horizontal tasting with Anselme Selosse (L'Esprit du Vin Copenhagen): Latest disgorging. Gold colour BdBg. Extremely nice aromas of toast, brioche/bread dough, baconnote (yes) and a little smoke, apple, and nutty tertiary notes. Leiden again in Rotterdam at Fitzgerald: Degorgement Feb 2014. Impressive Carelles. Nose Selosses trade mark oxidative tones, taste combination of very precise Chardonnay citrus tones and secundary oxidative tones. So much balance in this wine.
We decided to host a Les Mesnil semi blind tasting, with champagnes from Salon (1996), Selosse (Carelles), Pierre Peters (2002 Les Chetillons Oenotheque) and Doquet (unfortunately it turned out the Doquet we had is not his Les mesnil, but the 100% blanc de Blancs from Coligny, 10mins south of Les Mesnil). Interestingly, during the semi blind tasting, four of us were all quite certain which glass was Selosse, while the other three were rather confusing and created divergence in opinions
For Selosse Carelles (disgorged in 2015), it just really stood out for the chalkiness and smokiness on the palate yet intriguing with that oxidative touch, acidity was at higher tone (precise but not overwhelming); fruits and minerals were also very generous, it really got that Selosse uniqueness that everyone immediately guessed the glass. Love the wine The other three bottles were rather confusing and our guesses were all over the place, which was a bit surprising to us - as big champagne lovers, we thought we can easily guess the Salon. It turned out Salon 1996 that night was probably slightly off, with some funkiness on the nose initially and much more mature than I would expect for a 96 salon. The funk did blow off with time, and got good weight and acidity on the palate, but certainly not the Salon I was expecting for, a disappointing bottle. Pierre Peters 2002 Les Chetillons Oenotheque was very fresh and seemed still young (I actually guessed this was Salon initially), with white flowers, light honey, raw almond, and steely minerality on both nose and palate; this wine can certainly still age a few more years before enjoying, a nice bottle. Doquet has been on my purchase radar for a while and so far the experience has been great, for all the bottles i consumed past four years they all delivered very well, very expressive, structured and mineral with power and grace at the same time, acidity was slightly high-tone but was quite my style.

Comprehensive Selosse (Chicago, IL): Disgorged February 2017. Well, given where it comes from, this is the cuvee that ought to be a little Salon-like. There's definitely Selosse stylization here, but I kind of do see a bit of the white fruit aromas and raw power here. One of my favourite wines of the evening, this has pretty much everything I want in a champagne. It strikes an amazing balance between the fresh acidity, the mild oxidative tones, the intense minerality, a slight bready quality, and sweet and sour fruit. Light on its feet, this has a powerful linear drive on the palate, but has the concentration to provide breadth as well.

DC/Chicago Wine Dinner Extravaganza (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): Very powerful, very lean while also generous. Lots of toasted rye bread and gingersnap with so much concentration. The ultra dryness and oxidative style are not what I love in Champagne, but understand why others disagree. 90 points to me tonight, but much better if this is your jam.

Annual gathering with Chicago winos in Chicago – DRC RSV vertical, Selosse – Lieux-Dits and etc. (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): Complex fully mature nose displaying apricot, apple pie, apple cider, apple vinegar, sherry, almond cookie, cinnamon, nutmeg, butter scotch and limestone. Rich concentrated palate, sweet ripe yellow fruit, a hint of sugar, medium fine generous mousse, bright acidity and mineral, and a long sweet yellow fruit driven finish with a hint of almond paste and sherry at the end. This particular bottle shows more sherry than usual, close to Substance than Initial. The oxidative style is not for everyone so YMMV.
Disgorged in August 2016. Blanc de blancs, grapes from Mesnil sur Oger, super super mineral on both nose and the palate, sharper and even more focused acidity than other Selosse wines, some smokiness on the finish too, multiple layers with good structure, stony white and yellow fruits, crushed white flowers, extremely long and lingering finish. Love it.

Deg. March 2017. Super chalky notes, citrus, pear, some herbal notes too, white blossoms, some brioche, crayon, spices... It‘s medium-full bodied, pretty dense and with excellent mid-palate depth, with pretty high acidity, creamy mousse and excellent length. Still super young, but full of potential. Ends on some slightly bitter notes. Opens up and calms down substantially on day 2, even more complexity and excellent tension. The longer this is open the more the signature elegance/finesse of this wine is coming through. This turned out to be the most elegant, complex and most subtle of the wines. (97+)

2013 disgorgement. Subtly oxidative, peachy and deeply flavorful. Not overly expressive or detailed but straightforwardly delicious with light and bright citrus and open orchard fruits. Always enjoy the Les Carelles Blanc de Blanc style but maybe would have preferred a little more cream here, but then again that isn’t really the Selosse style. Have had plenty of these bottles but never reviewed. 92-93.

15 disgorge, oxidative and very intense champagne with lots of stuffing and long aftertaste but still prefer a more elegant mesnil this is probably too rich at the meantime. A big champagne recommend to decant it to unfold the layers, which was drinking better after decanting.

Fabulous. Best Selosse I've ever tasted. Just mature enough to make it complex, but not overly oxidized as too many other Selosse I've tasted. Has some crazy chocolate notes over pear and honey. Very, very impressive.

Enjoyed this in bordeaux. Disgorgement date is feb 16 2015. Nose had bruised apple, caramel, toast, grilled nut and almond. Palate was deep and flavourful with lots of stuffing. Consistently wonderful. Selosse magic.

23 February 2016. Often my favorite lieux dits, but tonight it was showing a bit more cream and softer side. Not an off bottle but lacking the energy and complexity this usually shows. Still good but not exceptional.

This wine is disgorged in early 2014, contains vintage 2003-2007, color deep yellow, very fine integrated bubbles, nose retained in the beginning, served at 10-12 degrees in Zalto Universal, after some time nose has a hint of gasoline, that went away, some mineral Riesling style, then honey, some sweet notes too, taste soft and delicious, good long finish. The wine is in the mellow area, approachable and clearly a food wine. This is my first time , to enjoy a whole bottle with my wife. I only had this one, but others with vintage 2008, 2009 and 2010, a sincere moment in Champagne to follow the vineyard for years instead of only one year per bottle.

Shared with my sons on father's day. Served in white wine glasses, which this champagne deserves. As others have noted, the first impression is of creaminess, with a touch of oxidation. Then a host of other flavors kick in and you are just left marveling at how so much flavor can be in one mouthful. Not for the faint of heart or for those who only like the cleanest blanc de blancs (I like both). This is really a wonder.

"White wine is fucking awesome" (Chicago, IL): Disgorged January 26, 2010. From different provenance than my last bottle. This is showing a little less advanced than my last bottle, and while all the saline, sherry, and nutty notes were here in spades, there was a slight hint more of freshness that I liked. However, I still maintain that these wines are a little bit better when young, so that the brighter acid notes have a chance to shine. Here, the brightness has dimmed, and this is a darker, more brooding champagne. It's got a nice chalkiness on the finish as well, but I find this too a little more advanced than I like (not that I'll turn down a glass).

A nice evening with good friends (@ PZ): Round and creamy luxurious bouquet with herbs and some beautiful reductive flavors. On the palate the same; complex and very tasty, creamy and refined, very tasty and an enormous length. A great beauty!

Spontaneous Mini-Paulée-Roumier, Rousseau, Raveneau... (Burgundy): Deep yellow. Rich, creamy, slightly oxidized. Not as impressive as on prior occasions, but part of this may be that we drank it at the end of a long evening with other great wines. It probably did not get the attention it deserved.

Disgorged 19th of February 2015. It was complex with notes of baked apple, lemon curd, truffle butter, honey and grilled nuts. It has fabulous shape and intensity in the mouth. Layers of flavour build through the palate and it finishes with chalky cut. Length is phenomenal.

Tasted blind. Immediately guess it is Selosse, the oxidative yet complex and charming aromas. Love the nose. Thought it presents some raspberry mousse in beginning, gradually showed a bit more chalky and aged Blanc de Blanc champagne sense, maybe because its solera usage for this wine. For vineyard, I guessed it wrong, thought it is from Cramant (chemin de chalons) as it showed considerable white flower lily perfume yet mineral sense. So lovely. Compared to other renowned winemakers’ bubbles from the same plot (Clos de Mesnil), Selosse continues to show its characters strongly (not like others’ more reductive metrics), it is a wine with distinctive personality. Disgorgement date Feb 2016.
2010 Disgorgment. Deep gold. Really showing the ox style with nuts, bruised and baked apple. Spicy and ginger. The palate is salty, nutty, apple. Very broad but the mousse is assertive and the acid is good, so the there is support for the weight. Spicy nutty finish. This isn't a tight laser package, but for me it works very well. I came back to this many times and for me it got better - bigger and bolder with more gripping acidity. Nose - 5-5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5-5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17-18/20.

Alt Rieslingfeier (New York City, NY): Disgorged January 26, 2010. I think some at the table like this wine much more than I did. More than a little oxidative on the nose and palate, this had a lot of nutty characteristics as well as a salinity that I would associate with a dry sherry. The palate is extremely rich and potent, and the extract here is basically off the charts. I did find this a little more oxidative then I prefer my champagne, although I wouldn't say that this bottle was in bad shape either. This was a relatively older disgorgement and it shows.

An Amazing Christmas Dinner (San Francisco): Disgorged January, 2016. Creamy, full of caramel, fine acidity, very mineral finish. This seemed advanced and more oxidative than a recent disgorgement should. Disappointing in light of the great experience recently with the previous year's disgorgement.

Tasted in an informal setting next to several other Selosse Champagnes. Dég. 2013. Explosive, exotic and aromatic, with amazing notes of hazelnut, brioche, minerality, chalk, honey, pear and some sweet spices. It's full-bodied, dense and powerful, with medium-high acidity, fine mousse and excellent length. A breath-taking Champagne and great balance of richness, tension and minerality. (97+)

Disgorged March 2nd 2016. Quite a complex and captivating nose of apricot, cereal, spearming and some smoke. The mousse just might be the tightest and most persistent of all six wines. It reveals a fairly dry supermodel of a wine brimming with everything that one would want in their Champagne. High acidity, tons of apple compote, some exotic spiciness and voluptuous frame all packed in one - it is impossible not to love this one. However while it combines lushness, freshness, great lift and extreme length in a rare and simply amazing manner it does not have the charisma and character that Les Chantereines has. On its own this would have surely rocked my world but in this company it was destined for the second place.

Comprehensive Jacques Selosse dinner (Source by Wolfgang Puck, Washington D.C.): Rich yet energetic nose displaying fresh OJ, orange marmalade, sweet spices, crème brulee, marzipan and wet stone. Excellent concentration, finest mousse of the night, beautiful interplay of rich sweet fruit and steely mineral, bright acidity, strong presence of mineral and a long sweet finish with a hint of dry orange peel at the end. With an hour of air, it becomes significantly fresher displaying fresh apple and pear. Very complex wine, fascinating and intellectual.

Disgorged February, 2016. Medium yellow, vibrant mousse. Served too cold, so lean, linear, and full of orange peel-more brightly citric than just about any Selosse I've tasted. As it warmed, though, more body with a tad of creaminess, and a fanning out of flavors-ginger, apple, some wintergreen. Fantastic soil and minerality at the end. Very different than the 2014 disgorgement was at a similar stage. That wine was so much more lees-filled and Burgundian. In contrast, this bottling had incredible zing and freshness. Depends upon what you value most.

Golden color. Nose is quite oxidative, sweet apples, brioche and crushed stone. Very long and complex but at the same time I expected more freshness and greatness from the wine. Solid but I prefer other BdB such as Comtes de Champagne and Salon much more. This bottle was disgorged April 2013. I do not think this will benefit from further aging

Ringing It Out, Ringing It In-Three Days of New Year's Celebration; 12/31/2016-1/2/2017 (San Francisco): Disgorged February, 2014. Fine froth, medium yellow. Apple and baked bread. Medium body at first but continued to grow, expand, and fill out with air. The fruit is actually more lemon than apple, and the stoniness is tremendous. Creamy and eventually tasting of caramel. Magnificent and truly akin to an experience of drinking a Grand Cru white Burgundy with some bubbles.

Served in a spectacular horizontal tasting of different Selosse Champagnes. Dég. April 2012. Explosive and exotic notes of hazelnut, brioche, minerality, chalk, honey, super ripe pear, also some sweet spices and a touch of smoke. It's full-bodied, dense and powerful, with medium acidity, fine mousse and spectacular length. A superb Champagne and the quintessential balance between richness, freshness and minerality. (96+)

Disgorged February 14, 2014. My first of this lieu-dit. From memory. Oxidative style and leaning towards Burgundy as usual, but perhaps this was a bit fresher and crisper than what I often find in his wines (then again this was cracked open earlier than usual also). Electric mousse in first glass, but it calmed down (which I find suits the wine better) a lot by the second glass. This was clearly more of an aperitif, which was very fine by us on this occasion. I would expect that this edition would have a broader appeal than many of his other wines. Really liked it.

Jacques Sellose is probably the most sought-after Burgundian style Champagne. Selosse Champagnes are innovative and simply gorgeous, though the inconsistency of his champagnes has to be noted.
My second Les Carelles, Feb 2015 disgorgement is noticeably a lot more evolved than 2014 disgorgement. The fine mature flavours hid away some of the finesse Les Carelles is famed for. Moussey cream soda, crushed flints, white peach, highly complex minerals and fine acidity. Serious

Disgorged February, 2015. Oh man, persistent lime and stone aromas. Medium weight, dry, incredibly intense mix of green citrus, herb, and crushed stone. Brisk and completely exhilarating. Great but a very different profile (less creamy and lees-filled) than the same disgorgement tasted at the domain 4 months ago. Go figure.

A lovely wine from Selosse. Slightly oxydative nose (more subtle than on many other bottles), aromas of pear, honey, cashew nuts, yet it is one of the most mineral cuvees from Selosse, which is quite focused and has a great acidity. Lovely presence on the palate: it is rich and a bit creamy. The bubbles are very gentle, very refined. The wine is quite long on the palate. A truly great Champagne.

Just start with WOW. Degorged 2014 this was probably the best champagne I ever had. Pure definition of burgundy chardonnay from the best parcels. It totally makes sense to compare it with a white Montrachet. Lots of peaches, apples and cream. It has a big body with a long aftertaste. I'm aware I drank it to young, it will have a long life ahead (20-40 years). Lucky me, I got it in the north of Spain for less than 200$.

Notes of caramel and orange sherbet with a bit of yeastiness on the end. This was consumed side by side with a '96 Salon as a bit of Mesnil-off and this surprisingly had a bit more acidity and zip on the palate versus the '96. Strawberry cream and honey dominated the flavor profile in the mouth. This was an incredibly delicious wine and very drinkable, but perhaps lacked a bit of profoundness relative to the other wines of the night.

A Range of Jacques Selosse Champagnes with Anselme Selosse (Avize, France): This one was disgorged about 3 years ago and contained wines from the 2003 to 2006 vintages. Remarkably different nose compared to the late 2015 disgorgement-much more herbal and floral, less caramel. Who would have expected that? Quite rich but not as much so as the more recently disgorged bottle. Not primarily about fruit; some toffee but the same soil drenched finale. Fascinating contrast, which points out how little you about you know about what will be in these bottles depending upon all of the variables.

A Range of Jacques Selosse Champagnes with Anselme Selosse (Avize, France): Now we had the fascinating opportunity to taste 2 Carelles which both started with the 2003 wine. This was disgorged in late 2015 and included vintages through 2009. Almost sweet, caramel aromatics, fairly weighty, but then drier and less rich than the nose suggests, and astounding minerality. Definite oxidative notes and a soil-coated finish. Ooh, I'm sure not for everyone, but count me in.

Some Wines from a Swing Through France-Paris, Chablis, and Champagne; 4/1/2016-4/9/2016: Disgorged February, 2015. Deep yellow. Transient mousse. Nose of caramel, apple, and yellow flowers. Medium to full bodied, old vine leesy, creamy feel. Low pitched citrus in the mouth, ginger, tongue tingling acidity, and stupendous soil that carries the finish. Only a modest sense of oxidation. Golden straw. That Selosse nose: citrus peel, green apple, caramel, ginger, and chalk are some of the nuanced and myriad aromas that leap from the glass. This bottle shows less oxidative qualities than other Selosse offerings, with a somewhat pure expression of Chardonnay, but this is still a rich, decadent Champagne. Excellent acidity and lively bubbles on the palate are followed by a lengthy, delicious finish of spice, minerality, and oxidative notes. Just a gorgeous wine. Le Mesnil-sur-Oger BdB Champagnes: (Disg. April 2013) Starts off with a chemical, rubber note not unlike Leclapart champagnes. Later it really reminded me of some sweet-smelling Dauvissat Chablis, where there is more oak than minerality. Oaked vanilla, lovely intense toasted bread, tree bark, wood, marinade on the nose. This is about Selosse, not about Mesnil. Freaky, controversial. On the one hand I really liked the depth, concentration and peculiarity of it, on the other rubber and chemical notes seemed borderline faulty. I will mark it as average of the range where I want to put it (87-92).

Piedmont and Champagne - Round 2 (MG): Overall a really nice bottle of Champagne but it failed to impress me when served blind. There was plenty of green apples and good structure but I didn't find the usual oxidative notes. At least not as intense and expressive as usual. A deathly young wine. Complete acid bomb. Disgorgement date of April 2014 so basically just out of its cave. Started to grow with more apple, but unlike your typical more oxidized Selosse, this had a freshness and youthfulness to it. Would be interested in how it'll develop. I'm not entirely sure.

Selosse by Roberto Petronio (Vila Viniteca - Madrid): More subtle with less oak here. On the nose boiled rice and some herbs notes, tangerines even but in a good mood. Opposite that cat pee smell. Crude and getting lighter thanks that intense acidity on the palate. An absurd style for Selosse?

Not really my style of Champagne at first, but this grew on me with some air. There's a very dominant oxidative character here, though with time it becomes quite complex and fascinating to smell with bright fruit, vanilla butter, dough and floral notes emerging amidst the oxidation. The palate presence is really creamy, almost oily though there's bright acidity beneath. Very nice, though not compelling. (Disgorged 12 April 2012.)

Drank along side the other Lieux-Dits. For me the chardonnay based wines were superior to the blends or the pinots. Both the nose and palate were so elegant. Dominant notes of terrior- chalk and mineral characteristics. Richer than the other two with a slightly creamier mid palate. Still very clean and fresh finish. I ranked the blancs very closely in this order: 1) Chalons, 2) Chantereines 3) Carelles

Disgorged April 13, 2011 – This was the most expressive off the hop with baked pear and fresh orchard fruit. Despite the baked pear notes the nose with quite fresh. On the palate this was noticeable less rich than the Sous le Mont with more precision yet the sweetest fruit. The mousse is lively yet soft with really solid acidity and nice palate freshness (even with the sweeter fruit profile) and a good dose of minerality. Finishes quite dry. The Champagnes of Jacques Selosse (Roberson Wine, South Ken, London): Disgorged 13Apr2011. 100% Chardonnay, <5 g/l dosage. 2003 dominant vintage in what will eventually become a solera champagne. A truly amazing champagne. Light spice, rich nose. Would struggle to pick it as a champagne from the nose. Rich on the palate, ripe, spicy, lots of presence and round. Well balanced, elegant, vibrant. We can go on for ever here but this is truly mesmerising. 96-97 WOTN by a huge mile.
Alcohol :: 12.5% Degorgement :: 24-feb-2011. This bottle has better focus as well as finesse compared to the previous bottle. Only very light oxidative note kicking off the amazing aromatic journey with copper, sweet spices, ginger, white peach, citrus and super intense minerality. It flows on the palate effortlessly even with the incredible richness ad concentration. Highly complex, huge depth, but despite the inner power this is all about elegance and finesse. The pedigree in this wine is undeniable. Finish is pure, long, juicy and lingering. As good as a BDB can offer.

This beauty is medium gold in colour. Elegant, classy and pure, this bubbly as a whole is definitely a formidable effort. It is a little bit oxidative, mineral, yeasty, has flavours like white flowers, ripe apple, lemon zest, grapefruits and some sweetness that reminds me of caramelised honey - all of these (and many others that I'm unable to describe) formed up together and created a complex, sublet champagne that display finesse, focus and absolute precision. Harmonious mouthfeel and also a long, clean, delicate finish.

Lieux-Dits Champagnes from Jacquesson vs Selosse (Stockholm): Golden yellow colour. Powerful nose of dried yellow fruit, some oxidation notes, quite spicy, minerality that grows with time in the glass. Reminds me of rum-soaked raisins, if made with white or golden raisins. Quite powerful nose but also with a certain elegance. The palate give a slighty sweetish impression on the attack, rather concentrated yellow fruit with some dried fruit, rather high acidity, pronounced spiciness, minerally mid-palate and on the finish. Rather ready to drink, but will surely be able to take long time in the cellar.
Bottle disgorged 24 February 2011. Base wine from 2003 and 2004. Produced from base wine treated in a solera style, this is much more of an extreme creation than for example its blanc de blancs cousin Version Originale, and more akin to Substance, but from a single vineyard.
Of the three Selosse Lieux-Dits wines released in 2011, I'd rate this in the middle.

2012 - Bachelor night (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck @ Paragon): Alcohol :: 12.5% Opened for 9hrs. Medium copper gold. This is really quite classy and elegance as well as good underlying power. The high tone and captivating oxidative note brings on the complex, intense aromas of melon, peaches, copper, yellow floral as well as exotic spices all tightly coiled in a highly refine and focus package. Intense sweet core that is tightly coil with complex, deep layer of yellow fruits, red cherry, herbs as well as solid mineral backbone. Long finish, lingering and persisting. A sleek, pure Champagne by Selosse and despite of 9hrs of slow ox, this is still tight and not fully giving. The impeccable balance and structure suggested this wine will continue to evolve in the bottle for at least another 7-10yrs if not more. 93-94+

Russell's Pebbles Fizz Offline II (28-50, London): Light to mid gold. More here than the Cote Faron. Spicy nose, very gingery, then orange rind dominating with a touch of coffee bean. More zingy, spicier and longer. Zippier. Interesting. A food wine. ****

Pure sweet honied fruit on the nose, initially I found no hint of oxidative notes, but soon after it began to show a little, piercing acidity but dried out in the glass, and went downhill a little.

STG Bordeaux (Eric's): upon pop & pour, I found the nose a bit closed, even in a burgundy glass, but did identify bright apple and a roasted nut aroma. the palate was very full, mouthcoating, even, with a lightly oxidized bent. In all, superbly balanced fruit and acid + uber-long finish = pretty incredible stuff. My first Selosse, and my introduction to the magic of Anselme. In other circumstances, I could have nursed this glass all night.

STG does Right Bank Bordeaux (Seattle, WA, USA): I certainly would not pick this as a Blanc de Blanc. Tasted blind I immediately guessed Selosse. Faintly sweet, very rich, slightly yeasty, this is a truly unique Champagne. Deep color. Wonderful notes of bread dough, vanilla and cream. This is luscious and poignant stuff for sure. Behind the richness there is a nice note of citric acidity, but the cut and acid take a distinct backseat to the rich, bready, yeasty, leesy character of this wine.

Fantastic wine with some apricot, quince, cooked orchard fruits. A lot of acidity and a champagne with a huge density. Some nice honey notes on the palate completes a very complex and balanced wine.

Nose: banoffee, fig, balsamic, dark chocolate, ripe pear, nuts, grappa, chestnut
Notes: disgorged in 2018.

The attack on the palate is still quite lively, but the full body comes to moderate the liveliness of the start. Again it is the extremely chalky feeling that emerges from it. Lemon, cinnamon, smoke. Aldehyde notes are there too. Layered and complex. Good intensity in the mouth. Each sip brings forth some variety - touch of caramel, citrus rind, oxidative notes. It’s quite rich and concentrated, with overall good balance. Stayed fresh for 3-4 days. A 2002 Krug served alongside was outstanding.

Aperitifs at Domaine Jacques Selosse (Avize): Again this is a blend of 13/12/11. Creamy and seductive with a leesy, tangy finish. Wears its power lightly and thus there's more of an airy ease to it than the other cuvees shown tonight. My favourite wine of the tasting.

With air, this has shaping up, even better focus and precision, very long and engaging. Really like the flavours profile and focus here. It even shows seaweed / seashell note.
100% Chardonnay
fermented and aged in oak barrels. Mini-solera of 8 consecutive vintages. Disgorged in July, 2018.

I love it. 95+

Darker lightly burnished yellow-gold; nose of fresh yellow apples, mirabelles, little fresh apricots, touch yeasty bread, wheat bread;
Creamy fine entry, fine foamy bubbles, quite sappy with good concentration and flesh; Zippy lively acidity, mouth watering, but still balanced.

Probably my wine of the night and we recently had this at our mini Le Mesnil semi-blind tasting - much more obviously oxidative, powerful, yellow and white fruits, gravel, rocks, smoke. Sometimes I feel the Blanc de Blancs are better able to offer contrasting elements to the style that make the wines so interesting.

Serious

This was an incredibly delicious wine and very drinkable, but perhaps lacked a bit of profoundness relative to the other wines of the night.

I think this one will a few years to show its best. Excellent. 92+

Anselme Selosse (Jacques Selosse) Legendary Dinner (Spruce Restaurant, San Francisco): Single vineyard blanc de blanc based on 03, 04, and 05 (solera style). Clean, rich, fresh, minerally; palate is austere, incredible (overwhelming) biting acidity, very young and needs much time. Racy, racy acidity. Wow. 96-98

Alcohol :: 12.5%
Degorgement :: 24-feb-2011.

Disgorged 26/10/11 and from the solera system in place for this wine. Light golden coloured with green tinges throughout. Complex aromas of smoke, pencil shavings, orange peel, pineapple and peach. The palate is incredibly complex as well with intense richness and precise acidity. Superb length and balance. A classic Selosse wine.

2012 - Bachelor night (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck @ Paragon): Alcohol :: 12.5%
Opened for 9hrs.

An afternoon spent with the master: Anselme Selosse (Avize): 100% Chardonnay from the site called Les Carelles in Le Mesnil.
I'm not sure how this will be released.
Fantastic wine with some apricot, quince, cooked orchard fruits. A lot of acidity and a champagne with a huge density. Some nice honey notes on the palate completes a very complex and balanced wine.
