Mandu - Washington, DC

Had a great Korean dinner at Mandu in DC. The rieslings ranged in price, style, vintage, and locale. Mandu was a great venue for us and their staff deserves a lot of credit. Further credit goes to Tim O'Rourke for organizing the menu and coordinating the dinner with the Mandu team.
2005 Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern Erbacher Marcobrunn Riesling Kabinett 89 Points
Germany, Rheingau
Nose of apples, some herbs and a touch of lanolin. Palate was zesty, but had nice density for a Kabinett. Great floral components combined with apples and pears on the palate. Very nice!

2007 Darting Ungsteiner Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese 90 Points
Germany, Pfalz
Enjoyed this wine very much. Dense nose of sweet fruits and slate. Palate had considerable density to it with nice tangerine, melon and wet slate. Nice acidity on the finish provided great balance.

2009 Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Spätlese 91 Points
Germany, Nahe
Notes are similar to my last bottle. Intense tropical fruit nose with the ever-present mineral component. Palate is lush but incredibly well balanced. A great value from the Nahe.

2006 Helm Riesling Classic Dry 81 Points

Thought the nose held some promise, with nice floral and peach flavors. Palate was very thin and lacked much character. Finish wasn't really there either.

2006 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Clos Häuserer 86 Points
France, Alsace
Dense nose with lanolin, orange oil and white florals. Palate had that Z-H density to it with extracted tropical fruit flavors with a good deal of honey. Lacked the acidic backbone that was needed to add to its balance and was a bit ripe for my tastes.

1999 Albert Mann Riesling Furstentum 92 Points
France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
Very impressive riesling. Nose was very fresh with deep lanolin, perfumed florals, some petrol, and crushed rocks. Also thought it had subtle, "tidal pool" tones that I just loved. Palate matched the noses freshness with great minerality, tropical fruit and overall balance.

2008 F.X. Pichler Riesling Smaragd Ried Steinertal 91 Points
Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
Impressive nose of herbs, minerals, star fruit and white peaches. Always love the Pichler Steinertal noses! The palate was pretty lush and dense with big peach, lime, lemon, and mineral flavors. The acidity was very prominent and creates a wonderful balance between the lush fruit and searing minerality. Found this drinking better than it did 9 months ago.

2007 F.X. Pichler Riesling Smaragd Ried Steinertal 94 Points
Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
Continues to be the best Pichler I've ever tasted. Incredibly exotic nose of florals, pears, a crazy amount of herbs, and intense spices. The nose is honestly worth the price of admission...lucky for us, a wonderful wine lies beneath it! Like the 2008, the palate has surprising density that some tout as overly modern and clumsy...but for me, it has incredible balance and minerality on the palate that the fruit is held in check. Great tones of white peaches, white pepper, fresh herbs, and mangoes dominate the palate. Impressive.

1992 F.X. Pichler Riesling Smaragd Ried Steinertal 86 Points
Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
Tantalizing nose of spicy lavender, minerals, citrus and wet slate. Sadly, the palate was very tired...almost no distinct flavors come through. There were subtle citrus and seasalt tones, but nothing very exciting. Disappointing that the wine wasn't really alive after the nose exuded such wonderful depth and promise.

2007 Rudi Pichler Riesling Smaragd Wösendorfer Kirchweg 88 Points
Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
Thought the nose was a bit hollow with some citrus tones and minerals. Lacked the spicy herbs, apples, apricots that I was expecting. The palate was a bit more interesting with subtle apricot, honeyed pear, apple core and minerals. Wondering if more air time would have helped this open up more....hmm.

2009 Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch (Müller-Burggraef) Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett 86 Points

An easy-going riesling that's a great value for sipping on the porch. No need for food, just crack this open and enjoy. Palate had nice citrus and floral tones...not overly complex, but quite enjoyable.

2009 Dr. Heidemanns-Bergweiler Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese 87 Points

Another solid '09 Spatlese. Good density on the nose and palate with pineapple, lanolin and herbs. Can anyone make a poor 2009 German Riesling???

2006 Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein Winninger Uhlen Riesling "B" Blaufusser Lay 89 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Dense nose of honey, apricots and herbs. A consistent note I get in Heymann-Lowenstein rieslings of late has been a pronounced waxiness on the palate - this was no different. Honey covered peaches and rocks really dominated the palate here. Great producer, great wine.

2001 Selbach-Oster Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spätlese 92 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Deep nose of lanolin, petrichor, seashells and peaches. Tertiary tones of diesel and apricots round out this tantalizing nose. Palate is wonderfully fresh with soaring tones of sea salt, fresh herbs, citrus, subtle mint, and papaya. A lovely Spatlese that is drinking very well right now. Could see this lasting quite a while as it shows very few signs of aging.

2008 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 91 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Great nose of lavender, seashells, pineapple and slate. The lavender really soared on the nose...wonderfully perfumed and deep. Palate was remarkably accessible and while it could have used more time to open up, drank incredibly well. Great fresh citrus, herbs, and minerals on the palate.

2006 Josef Rosch Trittenheimer Apotheke Riesling Spätlese 86 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Intimidating nose of honeyed fruits. Palate was dense, but unlike many of the wines we had this night, this didn't have that vein of acidity on the finish that kept the fruit in check. Quite a delicious wine that approaches Auslese-type sweetness. Would be a nice pairing with spicy food.

Thankfully this was double-decanted prior to service. Nose was wonderful with tones of honey pears, petrichor, sea salts, herbs and florals. Palate had density, but clear focus and balance. A melange of tropical fruits attack your palate with subtle herbs and a wonderful mineral acidity on the finish. Will last a lifetime.
