James presented us a masterclass style tasting on the wines of Morey St Denis.
He is a great presenter and knows (and loves) burgandy like nothing else. What a great guy!
Generally we found the premier cru wines, light and lean almost too easy drinking.
The Grand crus are in another league and the difference betweem the GC and PC is vast.
2009 Georges Lignier et Fils Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos des Ormes
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Barrel Sample.
First attempt at using 20% new oak for this cuvee. Young (as expected) tight and with lots of pinot acid. Some notes of wood but too early to judge yet.

2005 Georges Lignier et Fils Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos des Ormes 85 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Not quite there yet but still enjoyable. Needs its 10yrs in a bottle before it can be at top form. Less concentrated than the 09 and feels a bit thin too easy.

Definitely this wine benefits from aeriation and over the hour in the glass it developed nicely. Would suggest decanting.
Darker than 05, earthy, with good fruit. Coming to its stride but still needs some more time. Will never be great though

2007 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos de La Bussière 85 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Tried 07,06 and 05 side by side and have to admit we saw very little vintage variation. Almost as if Roumier was looking to master blend this wine to a specific goal.
Lean, mild and lacks density and depth. Still balanced and makes for nice easy drinking but not worth the price tag. Still feels like it can last and age. Not great though

The 06 is probably the better of the 3 in terms of now

The 05 is the one that feels it can age the best.

2007 Domaine du Clos de Tart Clos de Tart 91 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru
Good density ans tannin yet has a nice forward feel to it at this stage and can easily be enjoyed now with some aeriation. New oak is very present and feel a bit more man made than natural if we are to add something negative. We wonder if they chaptalised.

1988 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays 80 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru
Old and way into its decline wiith an old socks nose and an overly sweet core.

2002 Georges Lignier et Fils Bonnes Mares 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
WOTN. Dense and proper. Felt almost an outsider to the light Morey Saint Denis wines. Deep, rich, silky and very very good

2002 Olivier Guyot Clos de la Roche
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Very dark, musty rustic nose. Ugly nose and the tough Nicol said it smelled like Garbage.. Not for us

2007 Domaine Dujac Clos St. Denis 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru
Nice and expressive nose, very fragrant. Has a nice fwd angle to it but still this is a serious wine worth the Grand Cru label. Nice sweet tones on the palate. Very nice

This is a great wine and one we would buy on a heartbeat. Fine, elegant yet deep with lots of complexity. Probably the best Morey wine we have come across so far.
