Introduction

The 10th gathering of the official and redacted TWATS list, regrets - Clive. Kells, Baldy, Bosh and Stearnsy, yours truly in attendance. A celebration of sorts as our self proclaimed chairman Bosh has resigned and retired to SGN, leaving an empty space in our hearts and minds, and thankfully more wine for the rest of us.

This was clearly our most outlandish show yet, bottles lined up from around the global appellations representing the best. With a bit of dried meat snacks, cheese we lanched into the blind round, burkas intact, fumbling our way through pontification after pontification on each bottle.

Flight 1 - Pondering the task ahead... (8 Notes)

  • 1994 Yalumba Shiraz Reserve

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

Blind Round - Mature color, rustic red. Rust/metal, smoke, prune on the nose. "refined, quite", says Kells for the first quote of the nite. Nice length. Chairman slams down the challenge, " a Pinot, Young, 08 from Otaga NZ". Despite his confidence he is dead wrong as usual. Another taste yields acid, red fruit river all balanced, a mature & refined red. Ken goes with mature Aussie Cab, cool climate. Wrong again. Sim goes with decent Beaujolais. Also misguided. TWATS are off to a running start and flow of inaccurate guesses.

Round II - Hard candy now, killer, weight, deep and lingering, long & dusty, cherries, brilliant. WOTN.

  • 1996 Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Round I Blind - Nice red black color. Nose is crazy. Licorice, anise, mint. This is bilt for sex, a very expensive companion. Tight. It is a naughty dirty wine. Squonking! Tim goes with French girl, from the hills. Sim says far too much leg for a french and indicates his experience, and goes w oaky cab sav.

Round II - Minty, capsicum mouth feel very nice. Crazy good nose. Solid and very nice.

  • 1998 Penfolds Shiraz RWT

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Round I Blind - Darker, younger. Black purple. Nose of sweet dark cheries, vanilla. Tim goes with Aussie Shiraz. Nice. Glyceriny smooth, bloody smooth, velvet. Bosh goes with "_____ ______". Cod fire cinders. Fireplace ash, even shows off some nice legs. Tim then states, "strike all previous statements". Another random comment.

Round II - All the above notes are there, just nicer. Great stuff. WOTN challenger. Tim says it is F%^&n good stuff.

  • 2006 Penfolds Bin 389

    Australia, South Australia

Round I Blind - Dark purple. Tastes like the bottom of a fruit yogurt snack, fruit cake flavor, pie cherries. Newest pup yet, bit of pepper. The TWATS are tittering a storm on this one. GSM? Shiraz/Grenache? Then a random comment about Hugh Hamilton is cute. A dead dog. Not sure, but believe captain bosh was involved. This finishes dusty, red dirt clay for me. Interesting.

Round II - TWATS turn on the entry. It is still dark. The palate is fading, finishes short. "trying to hard " says tim. It is dark and overpowering, it is young.

  • 2000 Ridge Monte Bello

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Round I Blind - Serious, dark. Sweet nose, vanilla, tannins, American oak. Palate is watery, dry tannic. Dusty musty 01-02? Nose like an old library book.

Round II - Darkest in the line up. More fragrant, violets, still the palate just does not deliver. Light. This is still young tannic, too french, lacks fruit.

This was my wine and performed OK. It was a tough line up and it was much weightier day 2 from a small bit I took back from the 1.5l. This did have a good several hours opened before we started a few hour sessions.

  • 1996 Château La Mission Haut-Brion

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Round I Blind - Mature dusty look. Big stinky cheese on the nose, sweet. This is the thinnest wine s far, lower aclh, finish is short. Tim goes with French, someone says N Spain.

Round II - Big Blue has changed. No cheese, great nose, still a bit thin, more secondary flavors, leather, wood. Just too tired in the end.

  • 2001 Château Langoa Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Round I - Dark, young. Pepper in that says Tim. Smoke, shiraz, Aussie for sure. Young & Penfoldsy, says TWATS. Lovley tannins, licorice. 02? Kells goes with 03 Aussie.

Round II - Lighter now, smooth. Chris likey more, but nose is dead, and palate is thinning. Cocco? Crew is divided on this one.

  • 2003 Pepper Tree Shiraz Grand Reserve

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Round 1 Blind - Same nose as #1? Tim, "wow, wotn!". Fantastic, straight shiraz. Sweet, sweet, sweet. Reasonably young, maybe a 95? Massive with big bad ass fruit. Balanced.

Round II - Still stinky, treacle, black syrup. Red cherry vine river, just gets better and better. Nice stuff.

Closing

In the end there can be only one WOTN & one giant TWAT. A long goodbye and big wet TWATY kiss to C Bosh, the lyrical genius that coined the term TWAT, kept us together, he is the glue that binds, albiet a bit salty of a dog he will be missed. More for his outrageously bad and off guesses on wines than the wines he brings.

WOTN - Both the Yalumba Cape scored 9 votes each. No idea what system that was. The rwt garnered 5.
