Introduction

Valerie and I stopped by Bob and Selma's Sunday night for some wine, food and great conversation. Four wines accompanied a variety of cheese, a walnut vinegarette salad, quinoa salad, brie and broiled salmon. The wines were all great, but more than that it was just a great time to hang out and catch up.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 1999 Julius Clauss Niersteiner Spiegelberg Riesling Kabinett 87 Points

    Germany, Rheinhessen

this riesling showed flowers, honey and graham crackers on the nose. the palate was really soft. the fruit tangerince fruit was nice. very balanced. i can't remember a riesling i've had recently that better conveys a sense of softness on the palate. good buy for $15 on winebid.

  • 2008 Domaine Bernard Defaix Chablis 1er Cru Côte de Léchet 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

straw color, almost green in the glass. the nose is a rush of sea salt, lemons and slate. the palate has great acid but maintains a creamy mouthfeel. grapefruit, lime and lemon butter flavors blend well with oyster shell and a hint of nuttiness. i've had other vintages of this wine and liked them a lot. this seems to always be an excellent chablis for $25. it paired very well with a quinoa salad with a lime dressing, and also cut wonderfully through salmon.

  • 2006 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton

ruby red in the glass with a bit of cloudiness. this bottle had serious sediment at the bottom. the nose showed stewed cherries, raspberries, rhubarb and baking spices. the palate was soft and creamy. great tart cherries and baked raspberry pie flavors on the palate. good acid keeps it balanced and fresh.

  • 2005 Culler Syrah 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

this is a really interesting syrah. dark purple in the glass. the nose is really stinky and it only blew off a bit with air. it smells like smoke, blood and meat. but underneath, there's a lot of blueberries and coffee. really interesting nose. the palate is wonderful. it's really dense with gritty tannins, flavors of plum skins, milk chocolate, loam and charcoal. bob remarked that this wine reminded him of a chilean syrah, and i agree. that loamy, mineral-laced smokiness that is frequently associated with chilean reds is evident in this wine.
