Second Sunday Group: 2013 & 2014 Chablis (Jeff's): Starts with a sour grapefruit note that blows off leaving black fruit, incense and plum aromas. Dark fruit and pepper flavors with a good finish. Slight tannins; nice structure.

Bought for $20 as seemed like a good risk and it was. This is still alive and kicking. New World Syrah. Big red fruit, intense. Some of that minerality, smokiness others are talking about but more just bigger fruity Syrah to me. Dinged a couple points because of this - lost some varietal complexity to me.

Sunday Night Wines at Bob's (Washington, DC): this is a really interesting syrah. dark purple in the glass. the nose is really stinky and it only blew off a bit with air. it smells like smoke, blood and meat. but underneath, there's a lot of blueberries and coffee. really interesting nose. the palate is wonderful. it's really dense with gritty tannins, flavors of plum skins, milk chocolate, loam and charcoal. bob remarked that this wine reminded him of a chilean syrah, and i agree. that loamy, mineral-laced smokiness that is frequently associated with chilean reds is evident in this wine.

nose: pungent and dark nose of black cherries, liqueur tones, pepper, a touch of smoke, and a good bit of dark red fruits. Good depth and a good amount of fruit without being overblown
taste: full bodied and rich tones of black cherries, liqueur, anise, dark red fruits, bits of smoke and some black licorice as well
overall: this was decanted for about 2 hours. Dark purple color and pungent with smooth tannins right now. Seems to be drinking very well right now and should be able to develop for several more years

39th Annual Zinfandel Retrospective - the 2012s (R&D's): Popped & poured. Pepper and dark fruit notes. The palate follows the bouquet. Softened tannins with a nice finish. Drinking well.
